Bowiewallow

There’s been admiration here for Adam Buxton’s 2013 appreciation of David Bowie (highlight for me is Buxton’s uncanny imagining of Bish Bosch-era Scott Walker covering ‘The Laughing Gnome’).

Bowiewallow parts 1 and 2 is/are Buxton’s personal response to Bowie’s death and includes interviews with various slebs and civilians whose lives were touched in some way by the odd-eyed Chameleon of Rock. In part 1 there’s a skype interview with Dara O’Kearney, who had a long correspondence by email with The Dame (one highlight for me was Buxton’s response to the background barking of O’Kearney’s dog).

Part 2 contains a (for me) extremely illuminating interview with Johan Renck, who directed the videos for Lazarus and Black Star and who, for a non-native speaker, has a formidable command of demotic English. I even learned a new expression – ‘butt-hurt’.

New series of Serial, the podcast

Even if you not a podcast fan you can’t help have heard about Serial, last year’s gripping podcast which examined doubts over the guilt of Adnan Syed in the murder of Hae Min Lee. It wasn’t without controversy, notably turning the terrible crime into a form of entertainment and unleashing an army of untrained amateur detectives to interfere where they might not be welcome, but it was a fascinating series.

The new series starts today. The following description is cut and pasted from The Guardian: The podcast phenomenon Serial has returned as a high-profile platform for Bowe Bergdahl, the US army sergeant who spent five years in Taliban captivity after vanishing from his post in Afghanistan, to speak publicly about his alleged desertion for the first time.

Doctor Who Series 9 (35) : Episode 11: Heaven Sent *spoiler free*

I suppose I must declare interests here – my mate Rachel directed this but if it was shite I would say so.

I think possibly my favourite Doctor Who story (alongside Androzani, Genesis, Talons, Daemons etc) is Deadly Assassin, a rare companionless outing for Tom Baker’s Doctor including one episode set inside The Matrix (no not that one) a mysterious thought generated surreal landscape with danger and conflict at it’s heart. I happen to know that Rachel watched that particular episode in preparation for shooting this, her second set of finale episodes in as many years.

After Clara’s death last week, the Doctor has been teleported to a strange shifting castle prison with a mysterious wraith tracking his every move. This is effectively shown in low quality video footage immediately giving things an eerie and unreal air. Capaldi manages to keep us riveted with his monologues, trips to his “mind palace” (Hello Sherlock!) and a bit of old fashioned bafflegab. What starts out as a battle against grief, despair, fear and truth becomes a battle against time and endurance of the spirit. He is The Doctor, he will never give up.

Podcast bizness

So we hope you have been enjoying the new podcasts after our brief hiatus due to a cross between life getting in the way and frustration to the total lack of indifference feedback received. Someone complained recently about feeling down after not getting much response to a post it took them 2 mins to write. Try spending an evening recording and then the best part of a day editing it only for people to be too lazy to give you a thumbs up or even a “Yeah, good” post.

So last year as the snow was falling and auld acquaintances were being forgotten we had an open line to The Massive and anyone who wanted could join in and tell us about their year, what they listened to, or whatever was on their mind. So we thought we’d do it again this year. So at some point in December we’ll have a podcast session at a time when as much of the world’s population can take part. A while ago I floated the idea of a podcast centred on mental illness (there is probably a PC term for being bonkers in the nut but can’t think if it) a couple of people got in touch but we need a couple more so if its something you feel you’d like to contribute then get in touch via the site.
