Well worth a listen through BBC iPlayer – a Radio 4 documentary on the art of interviewing rock stars. Interesting contributions from a number of writers including Caitlin Moran, Barney Hoskyns, Dawn Slough …. and Julie Birchell sounding all of seven years-old. Includes entertaining reminiscences of John Lennon and Courtney Love.

I must say this pleases my dark heart. That this rag exists and “The Word” doesn’t is a travesty of what is true and good in the world. It was mostly a singularly boring read, and I’m not sure if it’s focus on Woodstock-friendly singer songwriters then dull American bands playing catch up with UK indie made it any better. it is about as interesting as the freesheet NME (is that still going?). Then there are the legendary album reviews…

I stopped reading the NME almost 30 years ago, and I don’t know any youngsters who do, but if it was to become a music-fans “Metro”, it might have a function. The US has lots of advertising-funded freesheets acting as independent media guides for their cities, along with specialist music freesheets. So it may not be a disaster.
