Drama broadcast on BBC Radio 4 yesterday afternoon.
“Adapted from the critically acclaimed Kinks album, Ray Davies’ autobiographical drama, co-written with Paul Sirett, tells the story of Ray’s battle for the rights to his songs.”
Kinks Klaxon – could be the title of one of their 60s albums that, couldn’t it?
Anyway, I know there are lots of fans on here. Richie @andyourbirdcansing I think if you buy this album one more time you get a telegraph from the Queen, or something, don’t you? But this one is signed by Dave.

I have just seen that Ray has confirmed that the Kinks are getting together again. Can’t seem to do the link to it – sorry!
What do you think? Too late for me I am afraid. What is the point now they are all well in their 70’s! Poor old Pete Quaife will need a miracle to get back on the stage anyway!
On the morning of 11th March 1996, I stumbled from Poole Hospital Maternity Unit in a maelstrom of exhaustion, elation, bewilderment and sheer terror. Having done a singularly poor job of looking after myself for the past 24 and a bit years, I was now responsible for the wellbeing of 6lb 8oz of mewling conehead. Objectively speaking, newborn babies are not overly attractive things. Nothing fits yet, everything is bruised and battered, and a faint smell of an abbatoir lingers. In my confusion, however, I managed to retain two certainties. Firstly, that this alien beast I had just left with his beaming mother was the most important and wonderful thing that had ever happened to me, and secondly that I should probably go and buy some music…
Back in those halcyon days of the music industry you were spoilt for choice for record shops in Poole. Woolies, Smiths, Boots, Our Price, HMV, all flourished profiteering from the Britpop wars. Falcon Records in the Dolphin Centre was my choice. I didn’t know what I was looking for, I just knew that this had to be a significant purchase – Babylon Zoo wasn’t going to cut it. Like one of those prodigal » Continue Reading.
I was compiling the playlist for my radio show earlier today (link below, since you asked), which included this track from The Yardbirds, and it occurred to me that back then in the sixties lots of songs had “hey” or “hey hey” or in extreme cases “hey hey hey” as part of the song.
OTTOMH I can think of The Kink’s “Dead End Street” and The Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’”. And of course Zep’s “Black Dog”. I thought maybe I could compile a whole 90 minute show of songs with guys saying “hey”.
And, are there any songs with girls saying/singing “hey”? I can’t think of any myself, but I’d love to include them, maybe even do a whole show of girls singing “hey” if there’s enough suggestions.
A friend on FB made this comment about Blue Suede Shoes. Not sure it’s such a crap solo, but it’s not totally amazingly gobsmackingly awe-inspirng to my ears. I couldn’t recall it because even though I sort of know the song I’m too young (like, 61) to remember it like I remember Beatles solos for example.
Anyway, the idea intrigued me. I’ll post what I think is a great song in the comments that I always thought had a crap solo but guitarist folks tell me it’s groundbreaking and wonderful etc.
Driving home from soccer training, number 1 son just told me with some enthusiasm that his music homework is to analyse 3 pieces from an artist of the 60s or 70s, colour tone, variation etc. Seems like a nice idea and he’s obviously into it. I have to point out at this juncture that any dialog with a 15 year old is rare, so anything that goes beyond monosyllables and grunts is amazing in the first place, let alone enthusiasm. Car rides tend toward silence usually.
So anyway, he said his first thought was HJH, but it seems like everyone else in the class is going that way. You also have to bear in mind this is in a music department talent night where the boys did a *very* convincing Pat Metheny cover where I wasn’t biting my knuckles, so awareness and choice aren’t an issue. Anyway, I piped up with The Dame (70s, Ziggy era, and he’s a fan), but he was ahead of me….he’d already picked the Kinks, all on his lonesome. Fair bought a tear to the eye it did.
Anyway, his “research” (presumably the first 3 results on Google) reveal that some deranged lunatic reckons “All » Continue Reading.
