Jude Rogers’ short documentary series Door Stepping has been airing on Radio 4 this week. In it, she goes back and revisits all the different homes she’s lived in, taking in a wide range of flats and houses, including her childhood home near Swansea, Jacobean university rooms at Oxford, and ramshackle London flatshares.

Each of the five 15-minute episodes are very personal and touching, and are full of feeling and memory (and rather brilliant little throwaway asides, such as the fact that Jude was college ‘mother’ to a future Bond girl, round about the time she also met Nelson Mandela and he told her he’d very much admired the Welsh rugby teams of the 70s).

Music, as you’d expect, plays a big part, with reminiscences about the posters and gig tickets tacked up onto walls and doors, and the records and sounds that were playing in the homes, on the streets outside, and by the neighbours at 6am in the morning.

It got me thinking about the homes – and the sounds of the homes – I’ve lived in.
