Here’s an interesting piece published in today’s Sydney Morning Herald (I’ve run it through the wonderful archive.md site so hopefully you can read it). Actually it’s originally from The Telegraph in London so if anyone here takes that rag you may have seen it. Anyway, I found it really interesting. Obviously getting the gig on a Bond theme is just about the apex of any songwriter’s career.

The title and release date of the next Bond movie have been made official.
So bring on your hate for Craig, if you will. I think he’s great and will miss him, since this will be his last. I have a soft spot for violent sociopaths and will be buying a ticket come April.

Having recently decided to watch – for some reason – the Bond Movies starring Roger Moore for the first time in something like twenty years, I can´t help but marvel at how poor they are. It suddenly went, comedy wise and elsewhere, very Benny Hill. At least Connery era was silly in an entertaining way.
Live And Let Die (2 out of 5) is a direct result of Shaft. “Hey, let´s use some black actors! It´s seems to be the thing!”) And JW Pepper is just a terrible character.
The Man With The Golden Gun (3 out of 5) has Christopher Lee, which is good. And the scenery is marvelous. JW Pepper appears again. In one scene he points out he´s a Democrat, which is a redeeming quality.
Today I´ve watched The Spy Who Loved Me (2 out of 5), which holds together even worse than the previous two. Jaws is silly in the wrong way, Stromberg has the charisma of a garden fence and well, it just goes on for a while and then it ends. Parts of the movie is like a more expensive Thunderball.

I was browsing the magazines in a supermarket today and saw another one of those £9.99 genre bookazine/magbook things – “100 Greatest Sci-Fi Characters Of All Time”. Nice idea, I thought, but I was a little dismayed by the upper reaches of the top 10 – Batman not even in there, Doctor Who only number two behind – WTF – Han Solo?!?! Get out the front door!! I just don’t understand that.
Anyway, it got me thinking – wouldn’t it be marvellous to ask you lot for your greatest fictional characters ever, no specific genre, no specific medium. Give me your top five and if there’s a big enough response I’ll compile a top 20 or top fifty or, heaven forfend, a top 100. There’s literally millions to choose from – see my tags for a little taster.
Go on, you know you want to.
