I remember watching some of this when it was originally aired. I was a 7-year-old nipper (what were my parents thinking?) and remember being pretty scared by some aspects of it.

Now it’s cited as a classic and a ground-breaker and so forth. I’m going to give it another go and see if it’s really that good. Available for 11 months. Those Afterworders who aren’t resident in the UK may need to resort to nefarious means to view it.

Wonder if we’ll also be getting “The Quatermass Experiment” and “Quatermass II”..

What do you regret throwing away, lending, recycling etc.?

I’m reading a good book at the moment: ‘Paperbacks From Hell’ by Grady Hendrix, a lavishly illustrated history / guide to the horror fiction of the 1970s and 1980s. My must-read list is mutating and growing like radiation-afflicted crabs, while the shots of lurid, dog-eared covers are acting like a Proustian time machine to my childhood. It is, as they say, all good. Apart from in one crucial respect.

I used to own lot of the books pictured and, reading about them now, I’d love to revisit them. But I can’t, because there was a particular house move in 1996 where I boxed up tons of novels and took them to the paperback-book recycling bin at Sainsbury’s car park in Market Harborough. It must have been a significant visit because I can still remember the time of day, dusk, and how I felt at the time, which was not all regretful or reluctant, just excited, because I had a great new girlfriend, a new job in thatthere London, and I was in virtually every respect of my life starting again.

This being the month of Halloween…

It being the month of ghosties and ghoulies, Empire magazine has presented its take on the 50 best horror movies of all time. Not a bad list and perhaps best seen as a conversation starter (as these lists usually are), but I do have a few comments:

What on earth is Jaws doing on the list? Scream at 3? First 10 minutes is great, but once Drew is dispatched this turns into Scooby Doo. Exorcist is too low. So is both Texas Chainsaw and The Descent I don’t get the reverence for The Shining. I never found it scary. I didn’t much like the book either, but at least the book shows Jack slowly turning insane. In the film, I always thought Jack was a bit too axe happy from the moment he walked unto The Overlook. The Cabin in the Woods is garbage. Not meta or post-modern. It just is not as clever as it thinks it is nor as scary as it wants to be. Agree with all the love for John Carpenter. I read a book of questions and answers about horror films called What’s Your Favorite Scary Movie? by Killian H. Gore.

The questions (with my modifications) were:

Favourite horror film? Favourite horror director? Favourite horror sub-genre? Favourite ‘bad’ horror movie? Favourite horror killer? Favourite horror monster/creature? Favourite horror franchise? Favourite horror sequel? Favourite horror remake? Favourite zombie movie? Recommend an obscure horror film for a hardcore genre fan. Favourite non-horror film with a strong horror flavour? What’s the film that made you the most consistently fearful, and what age were you at the time? What’s the single biggest jump scare you’ve experienced? Any horror film that went too far in a bad way? What’s the weirdest horror film you’ve ever seen?
