So it seems I’m off to SF in a couple of weeks for a week-long tech conference which I’m not desperately interested in, but hey ho, gift horses in the mouth and all that. What would anyone recommend? Likes: food, drink, sport, people, tunes, books, getting to feel the soul of a place. Many thanks in advance.
Music Hall ATM query part two
Inspired by @attackdog ‘s post on Scottish Music Hall singers, can anyone shed light on a remembered music hall moment that is driving me crazy as I can find no evidence for it out there. As I remember it, heard on Radio 2 or 4 in the seventies, it was a song sung by Arthur Askey to the tune of In the Hall of the Mountain King. To that ner ner nerner nanna na tune he sung the words
Mother owned a coffee shop, coffee shop, coffee shop Mother owned a coffee shop In Portobello Road
Now, it may not be Askey. It may not be exactly those words. Can anyone help?
The real best of Van Morrison – your help, please
The glaring lack of many works by The Man on Spotify sent me back to iTunes recently, in the hope of adding to my existing “best of”, assembled a good 10 years ago.
Unfortunately, he’s pretty unrepresented on there as well these days, so I’ve spent the last week listening to the further reaches of his back catalogue and ripping the odd find to iTunes.
So, now my best of is a good 50 songs long, covering as many of the veteran R&B grump’s Caledonian soul stompers, Celtic reveries and metaphysical musings as I could find.
But it’s too late to stop now. I fear there must be some deep cuts that I’ve missed. Or perhaps you could help me rearrange the running order so that the GLW doesn’t insist that I turn it off whenever we get into the more “difficult” likes of Rave On, John Donne. Maybe some of his recent records are under-represented (The Healing Game seems quite good).
So, here’s my work in progress. What more needs to be done? (I’m assuming it won’t be improved by any of the forthcoming duets with Hucknall and the like). Strangely, the Guardian’s music site hasn’t covered » Continue Reading.
Ask The Massive: Headphones. Cans. Proper over-the-ear ones.
Sound quality trumps price, unless we’re talking silly money of course. Any personal recommendations, audiophiles?
ATM: Ipod Classic – decent replacement?
My trusty old 120gb Classic IPod is like a pensioner. Its forgetting stuff, stopping every 5 or six songs for a sit down and won’t communicate with my music library anymore. Basically it’s shotgun behind the chicken shed time. And as the recent cessation of manufacture by Apple has driven prices to sillybolllocks levels getting another secondhand on Fleabay is a no-no
Is there a decent alternative? I rely on the big bastard for my frequent road trips round the country so, yes, I do need 17,000 songs at my disposal whilst on the mooove.
All suggestions gratefully received ect
ATM Recommendations for a car speaker for Kindle and Iphone
Hello all,
My car stereo has broke and can’t really afford to get a new one that does what I want right now. I have used my Kindle on the dashboard today and it is fine for driving around town but when on the motorway its just not loud enough to get over the road noise. Can anyone recommend a portable speaker that could be good to use in the car for my Kindle and I-phone.
Cheers – Joe
