I’ve been reading stories from the marches that took place yesterday throughout the USA – and many other countries – protesting against gun laws. There are wonderful, moving accounts from witnesses, survivors and bereaved relatives. It strikes me that there is an almost schizophrenic split between these people and the politicians who supposedly represent them, who have to perform amazing feats of logic and self delusion in order to persuade themselves that their stance is moral.
I have seen quotes from commentators who are likening this groundswell of anger from many quarters to the protests at the start of the Civil Rights movement in the Sixties. I hope that this turns out to be true – many of these protesters are young and will be voting for the first time in the next USA election. Let’s hope it maintains its momentum.
