It’s marvellous to look at, has a rambling plot to get lost in, and a fine cast. Tom Hardy overdoes the enigmatic thing a little, but overall it’s an enjoyable romp with just enough of the dark stuff and one or two very fine stovepipe hats. Regency London never felt so enticing. In a bad way.

Loving it; all darkness, violence, sex, depravity, corporate greed and foaming madness. It makes a change to find something like this on a Saturday night. Strictly it ain’t!
Only complaint I have about it is having to switch the subtitles on in order to catc h all the dialogue! Cracking stuff, not a standard Saturday night show and all the better for it.
Not many actors do ranting nasty better than Jonathan Pryce.
I’m watching it now and that’s very true, but it is of much modern drama, even with a sound bar on.
‘Listen, I love your performance, but can you put even more sibilance into that whisper? You’re still almost audible above the background music.’

Gave up after two episodes. Too much of ‘a performance’ from Hardy for my taste. Not a character, but a film star playing a part. The whole thing slowed to a crawl every time he appeared, being enigmatic. But my wife’s stuck with it and says it’s got better.
I think he financed much of it himself. Probably explains the amount of brooding he gets to do. Loving it. Horrible, dark London. Gore. Sex. Gatiss in the maddest of mad cameos, Stephen Graham with a compass tattooed on his head and this week, Tom Hollander as a chemically-enhanced sex-beast.
Ewwww, Tom Hollander doing “sexy”. Right up there with Tom Hollander doing “hard” (a la Night Manager) Thank feck I bailed after Ep1.
I didn’t think he was trying for “hard” as such in the Night Manager – he was going for sinister and menacing and did it pretty bloody well IMO.
He did a good (and similar) job of camp menace in the Joe Wright film Hanna, which I have a real soft spot for.
It wasn’t on my radar but someone at work suggested it and I’m rather glad she did. I’m not sure I’m totally following it and I certainly haven’t got a clue where it’s going, but that’s a good thing. Good cast list too.
As others have said, not your typical Saturday night TV.

Cousins off to somewhere exciting, I went off to the local mini-supermarket for several cans, when, whaddya know, the holders of that year’s coveted Christmas No. 1 spot should walk in.
I’d love to tell you it was The Beatles in ’63, ’64, ’65 or ’67.
It was East 17 in 1994, presumably on their way to Walthamstow.
I stuck with it – it just looks so good, and some great scenary chewing. But…did they really swear like that? I find it gets in the way a bit.
I thought most of the effs sounded appropriate, and the one C was in context. The swearie that took me by surprise was the lovely Lorna grassing up one of the audience with: “If you must wank, just pull your pud and get it out of the way.”
I was nowhere near old enough to drink when these were on, but any mention of Taboo, and I think of this.
i’m sort of liking it, but…..every shot of hardy flouncing around in his long cape/coat thing brings to mind the monty python skit regarding the Scottish poet.
“could ya lend me five pouuunds……till ma giro comes” etc.
that and every shot of the guy topless….I can hear the wifes overies rattling!!!
