Always wondered why they haven’t done a ‘johnny cash’ and go back to basics. It’s not like the world’s crying out for another Stones stadium rawk album.
The presumption of these old timers, eh! I mean you wouldn’t get any of the original artists playing on into their twighlight years……..
Seems entirely appropriate to me, awaited with relish.
i’m far more fired up about this than I’ve been about anything they’ve done since, er, Stripped.
all of which is to say that I think this could be a most enjoyable listen. They’re not going to reinvent the wheel, but it’ll end up getting more listens than most of the rest of their recent stuff.
Not wishing to harsh anyone’s mellow but… Keith can barely play at all these days due to arthritis and Ronnie Wood has frankly never played the blues in his charmed life.
That means it rests on Jagger’s harp, last heard on Love is Strong.
Here’s proof that Keith can’t do it any longer. From the 2014 Crossroads, he attempts Key To The Highway with Eric. It’s pretty lame and nothing you couldn’t hear down your local pub.
Clapton carries Keith all the way, but watch out for the solo. They’d clearly rehearsed a two verse guitar solo, but just as EC is about to goes up the dusty end for the second verse, Keith decides to start singing again. Eric’s face at 2:13 is a picture.
“…but we got on a blues streak,” he said. “We cut 11 blues in two days…”
It really irks me when people refer to blues songs as just “blues”. He wouldn’t say they cut 11 rocks in two days, or they cut 11 discos in two days.
Gah!
Stones haven’t done a decent album in yonks- yep think we all agree on that.
An album of staium rock holds little appeal – yep got that too
Keef cant play anymore – yep, that’s plain to see.
I’m hoping this will be about feel, and as Hendrix said, blues is easy to play but hard to feel. I think the Stones have the feel- they’ve always had it.
Oh and what is that other one? ‘Ronnie Wood has never played blues in his charmed life.” Fuck knows why a band rooted in blues would ask him to join…
I love Ronnie’s playing and always have. Check out the Faces doing I’d Rather Go Blind from the Coast to Coast: Overture and Beginners album. It’s too slow, ragged and very loose, but it has bags of charm.
There was a self-serving Channel 4 documentary on Mick about 10 years ago… designed principally to get Elizabeth Jagger’s modelling career up and running (it must be SOOOO hard for those kids)…in which we saw him jetting to hither and thither for an hour.
The thing, however, which really stood out was that when mugging it up in front of the camera with a mouth organ, a piano, a guitar or simply singing unaccompanied, the guy could REALLY do it.
It was the best Jagger/Stones I’d seen since the late 60s, all the glam crap completely stripped away.
I said at the time, why don’t they just rush off 10 obscure country blues songs in a day, no fanfare, no labouring over it etc.
Sell it at Sainsbury’s, pitch it at £7, probably outsell Bridges To Babylon 5 to 1.

Can I review the advance copy?
Baron Harkonnen says
`warm` `true to the original` `Leadbelly would turn in his grave` `retire` `their age in total is 738 years`
attackdog says
I think you just have reviewed the advance copy.
Sounds as wildly exciting as, er, the last advance copy of the album we could not wait for.
Superb review, btw
Junior Wells says
Welll let’s see. As long as Mick doesn’t get carried away with those unauthentic accents, I’m optimistic.
Baron Harkonnen says
The wait begins `cos Jagger will probably change his mind a dozen hundred of times but it looks good Junior.
Blue Boy says
they are not just great, they are ‘extremely great’.
Getthenet says
They were great up until about forty plus years ago.. Since then they’ve been absolutely shite.

‘We’ll never get that on the record cover’.
Fnarr, fnarr.

Stones, Blues, Clapton! All it needs is Donald Trump on backing vocals to be the most unappealing album ever.

I don’t know, I shall give it a lis.

No wonder they’ve drafted in God.

No news on the number of folks, jazzes or heavy metals they attempted.

I once watched 11 blues in two days. I suspect they mean something different.
