I really didn’t feel like going out and nearly just wrote off the ticket – but I’m so glad I went for it because this was a wonderful, uplifting evening. First up were Weedgie noistrels The Giro Babies who made an entertaining racket, with a charismatic front man. Best support band I’ve seen since Max Webster in 1979.
Main event Mr Mason was in cheerful form. Anyone expecting some Beta Band material would have been disappointed, as this consisted entirely (I think) of songs from Monkey Minds and Meet The Humans. I don’t quite buy the prevailing view that Meet the Humans is a step forward from its predecessor but it’s certainly more consistent. The Monkey Minds highlights here really stood out, I thought. But that’s nit-picking – it was all good and entirely groovesome. I felt my spirits lift further with every song, like a boat floating on the tide. Munsen is definitely on form and on fire and has a tight band behind him. Catch this tour if you can.
The audience:
Mainly young people. Bastards.
It made me think..
I love music and I particularly love it live. There’s nothing else that quite lifts the spirits and lets your soul soar again. Magic.
