Following on from Twang’s excellent album, In the spirit of outrageous self promotion, here is a new song from me.
Downtime
This is a song I wrote during a period when I was suffering a long bout of creative block. I figured the best way to tackle creative block was to write a song about it.
The original recording I made was dull and uninspired. When I came to re-record it I thought what can I do to improve it? What would Bowie do? Well, he would make it more funky and add some weird Robert Fripp-like guitar (In his case, actually using Robert Fripp). The end result is much improved I think (My clumsy attempts at Frippertronics are on the fade out). Enjoy

Nice work. The Bowie influence is clear! great sax and I like the Frippertronics.

Really like this – got a great feel and rhythmic groove and love those weird chords at the end of the chorus. Is that you playing sax is ?
Keep going Steve/Askwith – is there an album coming along ?

Thanks for the feedback Twang and FF.
I played everything on the track apart from the sax and drums, both of which were from Loop Loft libraries. The Bob Reynolds sax library only had one set of loops in E and it was in swing time so I had to quantize it then smother it in echo to mask the weird artifacts that created.

I dig this! It’s an unusual feel for a home recording.

Thanks Mavis. The original version was a lot more the straight 4/4 normal home recording you would expect. I tried to make it sound more funky. I did have a stab at playing trumpet along with the sax but it sounded awful
