Loved them at the O2 (though hated the O2) so I’m tempted, especially with Steve Winwood too!
Never saw the Dan, nor necessarily much sought to. But I just sort of feel I ought to make an effort, even if this version of the Donald Fagen band, Steely Don if you will, are unlikely to play much from the first 2 records, which is when I showed peak interest. But Winwood is great live and would normally be enough to attract my attention without assistance. Bet the prices are well silly, tho’.
They are pretty damn authentic – it’s largely the same band as has been touring as the Dan for a long time, and as DF has the voice they sound right. It’s a shame Walter isn’t there of course but it’s not 50% of the Dan, it’s a much higher percentage than that, live. An album would be a different matter of course.
@Tiggerlion – they are doing Manchester!
Saw the Dan with SW support in Sydney a few years ago – they did Pretzel Logic together as an encore (I think)
I continue to be staggered by my decision to not attend the concert at a Winery in the Yarra Valley. The Dan had toured recently (the previous year), a show I saw and guess I figured that was enough. Fuckwit.
Will be booking these on Friday assuming of course they haven’t all gone in the presale the day before.
You can register for the presale on the Live Nation website…?
I’d love to see “The Dan” before they are no more, and I reckon Winwood would give a good show, but I won’t go to arena shows any more. I just don’t like being in such venues. Also not terribly keen on giving any support to LiveNation.
The last Steely Dan gig I attended was on 06/09/00 at the Armadillo in Glasgow. The ticket cost £27.50. I imagine the Glasgow tickets this time will be 3 or 4 times that amount. However, I will be putting in my bid later this week. Even if it was Steve Winwood alone, I would still be up for it. What a double bill!
Hey, have we exchanged notes on this before? I too was at the 2000 Armadillo gig and it was and remains the best gig I have ever seen. The band were note perfect – as you might expect with The Dan, the standard of musicianship was astonishing and the sound in that hall was just sonic perfection.
Is this newly announced show in the Armadillo again or in its new big brother across the car park?
No, we haven’t discussed the Armadillo gig before. I don’t do much discussing here.
Yes, it was a tremendously good gig and it is up there with the best I have attended (Stevie Wonder at the Hammersmith Odeon in the 90’s and Elton John on 25/02/73, £1, also come to mind). I am pretty sketchy on the details of the night. In fact, I’ve been wracking my brains trying to remember who was with me that night!
I wish it was in the Armadillo again but it will be the Hydro. More chance of a ticket I suppose
Winwood is always great. I’ve seen him several times over the last three decades and he never fails to deliver. His remarkable voice is still in excellent shape and he is a stunning guitarist. Of all the enormodomes, I rather like the O2. It’s easy to get to (I live in Sussex) and the various bars / eateries are quite civilised.
One caveat: I saw the Dan twice in the last – what – 20 years at Hammersmith Odeon (aka Carling Apollo / Eventim Apollo / etc) and Wembley Arena and was severely underwhelmed. The songs were impeccably reproduced but I don’t remember the band stretching out, improvising or really adding a great deal to the original material. As is so often the case, it was like listening to a loud, but poor stereo, surrounded by strangers.
To add to the disappointment the Hammersmith audience seemed more concerned with endless trips to the bar and – I presume – the loos. I would have ascribed that to the average age and overwhelmingly male demographic (and I’m 58 and overwhelmingly male), but it seems to be a problem whenever I go to Hammersmith.
Despite this, I may still go.
This is Wembley rather than the O2. We saw the Beach Boys 50th anniversary gig there in 2012 and it was OK. Of course there will be the usual thing with people getting drinks the whole time and talking but that seems par for the course these days.
OK, I’m in for the Wembley gig. Decent seats near the stage for £99 each…well, it’s only money….but only a fool would say that.
Anyone else..?
Yes, I reckon Any Major Dude would also say that.
I will also be at the Wembley show
Booked
This is probably old news here but only recently saw this from the online ‘Yacht Rock’ show
“If you want smooth, you want Steely Dan..”
At 10.30 the “best available” at the reliably awful NEC were in the clouds at an acute angle to the stage for £97 “not inclusive of fees”.
I’m out.
I’ve decided to pass. They were brilliant at the O2 but I just can’t face the enormodome experience.
I’m in. The GLW pointed out that she stopped listening to SD (and SW) when we got married and there was no longer any need to listen to what boys listen to. So at least there’s only one ticket to buy!
