I just watched a film called Thank You For Your Service. I won’t write a review cos I’m a lazy feck, but it was ok. Not bad, not great. The based-on-true story of some soldiers who went a bit doolally after coming back from Iraq. Anyways, my favourite thing about it was Springsteen’s take on a standard army marching song that’s used in the end credits. Best thing he’s done for a long time.

Some say freedom is free, but I tend to disagree
I say freedom is won, through the barrel of a gun
Had a brother in Iraq, he didn’t come back
I ask why oh why, do soldiers gotta die?
Some say freedom is free, but I tend to disagree
I say freedom is won, through the blood of someone’s son
Some say freedom is free, but I tend to disagree
I say freedom is won, through the barrel of a gun
Daddy died in Vietnam, he was killed at Khe Sanh
I ask why oh why, do soldiers gotta die?
Just listened – good to know Broooce still got the magic. On the back of your blistering review I will give that movie a whirl tonight
*SPOILERS*
Everyone dies in the end.
Even the cute girl above? No, the puppy as well? Mrs W ain’t gonna like it….
The cute girl accidentally eats the puppy then gets burned alive herself for being a satan-worshipping layabout. Mrs W will love it – it’s a musical.
As a fan of Bruce’s quiet and pissed off side, this is great. Thanks for sharing.
You’re most welcome, Neela. Tis great, innit? Unfortunately it’s a crap recording as no official version has been released yet, although that kinda adds to its appeal. Bit of a sort of Tom Waits-y vibe going on there.
I´m sure it´ll be released sooner or later. Maybe in an alternative version no one´s really asked for.
There’s supposedly a new album in the offing, but it’s been in the offing for a while, which is surprising given that there is so much for Bruce to be pissed off about right now. He’s been quiet for too long.
Perhaps Bruce is just too pissed off to be clear-headed about what he wants to say on a new album.
And perhaps Sony/Columbia are resistant to him being too outspoken right now, with all the heat that’s currently in American politics. Also perhaps he’s conscious of the fact that a proportion of his fans are probably Trump supporters too.
Or perhaps he just hasn’t written any songs he wants to put out.
There is that possibility, yes.
Isn’t he kinda busy playing a small theatre on Broadway every night …..?
Hmm…curious, given the rumpus over Born in the USA being used by the Trump campaign, that the Boss should lay himself open to something similar happening with this. Or am I over-simplifying?
You meant Reagan, I know. Trump isn’t to blame for everything
And Trump, it says here.
Really? I guess it makes sense: there aren’t really any neocon protest songs.
While poking around in an attempt to prove just how wrong you were about that, I came across this:
http://www.conservapedia.com/Essay:Greatest_Conservative_Songs
Comedy gold:
YMCA/Village People/About the Young Men’s Christian Organization. About pulling yourself up from your bootstraps with the help of Christianity.
You Can’t Hurry Love (You Just Have to Wait)/The Supremes/Abstinence for rock fans. Also performed by Phil Collins.
Stairway to Heaven/Led Zeppelin/A great Christian classic by one of the most well-known bands!
If that site is satire, it’s brilliant.
if it isn’t, I just don’t know what to say
Can’t be satire, there’s just too damn much of it, complete with citations and working links.
Beat It is neocon protest song. Who knew ?
Pretty sure MJ didn’t. Them libtard snowflakes are out to get you.
I think my favourite might be Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes, Kevin Ayers: Defends the right of businessmen to choose their customers: “we don’t serve strangers in blue suede shoes.”
Or possibly Sunny Afternoon, The Kinks: About a rich man trying to enjoy the simple things in life because the nanny-state has nearly bankrupted him.
The gift that keeps on giving!
In a recent interview, he said that he hasn’t been writing at all lately so you wonder if the muse has left him. Granted, he claims to have the Bacharach/Glen Campell-esque album ready to go but that’s been talked about so much without seeing the light of day that you wonder will it remain darkness.
The Broadway thing is certainly keeping him occupied – and with rumours of another extension beyond June and maybe some European version of it to come – it seems unlikely there’ll be anything new this year. Or at least in the first half of the year.
Maybe he just feels he’s got nothing to say. The last time Bruce had any fire in his belly (from a songwriting perspective at least) was 5 years ago with the Wrecking Ball album. Which, judging by the way he spoke about it in his book, he clearly thought it deserved to be better received than it was. So perhaps he’s sulking a bit, and has taken his ball home to Broadway and isn’t coming out to play with his friends anymore.
He wouldn’t be the first artist to have written or even recorded an album and then decided it’s not up to scratch and binned it.
But yeah. Maybe he’s just too busy with his other project.
Wrecking Ball IS great, a favourite of mine. Musically – and for that matter lyrically – a bit of a continuation of the Seeger Sessions. Not your typical E Street Band stuff though, which I guess is what most fans want.
Having heard the song above I can save everyone some time: the muse clearly has left him. That is a monotonous dirge. And not in a good way.
