Honestly, you’ll kick yourself.
The truth of the matter is that ********* is a man who has transcended pop music. He is something greater than his own work. Like Morrissey he is as important for who he is, for his journey through the pop culture landscape, as he is for the myriad songs that have topped the charts everywhere from here to eternity. He is, I am afraid to tell you chaps, a star. He is an icon. He will be remembered long after the bloke who played bass in The La’s has passed away.

Is it Robbie WIlliams?
My first thought as well.
I suspect that’s a hole in one.

Shakin’ Stevens has a new record out?
Ed Sheeran?
David Bowie?
Sting?
While I am here, to save time, my other suggestion is Gerry Rafferty.
Cliff?
I’ve eliminated John Power from my list…
Arf!
Barry Manilow
We’re waiting…
Skirky appears to have confirmed that it’s the not considerable talent of R-Willy, I mean who else would it be…?
Shaggy?
Aki Streeter
John Shuttleworth?
I’ve just noticed he posted #winner under the Robbie Williams answer.
It actually is that fat dancer from Port Vale? It is? Ai is a terrible thing.
I am in a bit of a bad mood but really…
Bit miffed it wasn’t Gerry Rafferty tbh.
I don’t know whether the writing of the above has confused the issue in the flowery language… but Morrissey has opened more fetes around the world than topped charts in it.
See also: sex pistols, clash, jam and, of course, smiths. Not: the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.
Just counting, if we’re talking worldwide. So I’m a numbers girl!
Is it possible for you to make a post without bringing your tedious, repetitive agenda into everything? You can’t ever even praise any music without casting your scorn on to something else. Why do you have the need to do that?
I like Deram’s agenda. I think our music collections are similar
It’s fine to be positive about what you like, and he does seem to have reasonable taste, unlike “dodgers”.However it shows a degree of insecurity when that has to be combined with slagging something else off every single time
I offer some advice that has helped my peace of mind numerous times: don’t feed the trolls.
Listen to MC’s words of wisdom.
Ah but the mention of Morrissey is not coincidental as the Ginger Spice of Take That has a song called Morrissey on the above-mentioned album. Unsurprisingly it’s about and sort of directed to the Mournful, melancholy Manc. I heard it and, to be honest, hadn’t an idea what I made of it.
I’ve just listened to it. I can only assume Robbie made it dreary in homage to Morrissey’s perceived dreariness.
It’s almost perfectly ironic to the lyrical brilliance and clever tunes and rhythms of The Smiths. It is a nothing of a song.
Margarita Pracatan? I saw her once at the Reading Festival.

Just behind all things Trump, Radio 4 news had as a headline that today Robbie has passed The Beatles with his 16th number one….
It’s only a matter of time until the headline:
“Robbie Williams Bigger than Beatles”
“Robbie Williams bigger than the not-enough-hits Beatles”.
Sorry, but that’s just how these things work 😏
The Let Me Entertain You Hit Maker confirms his position as greatest pop artist of all time.
Ed Sheeran is also only four off, and barely into his 30s. A proper artist.
The Stones are only two off. Come on Mick and Keef, pull your finger out.
Dai will be along in a minute…
(Edit: don’t bother, he’s here…I should have read further down.)
Well The Beatles only released 12 albums initially so they did well to get to 15 no. 1s
There were four of them and they had barely anything to compete against. Slackers.
Macca gets up to 22 no. 1 albums if you include his solo efforts (and 51 Top 10 singles)
Don’t make me bring a little band named Take That into the picture, it will only make it even more one-sided.
The British public have heard what McCartney has to offer, and they’re loving angels instead.
Gets him to 19 if my calculations are correct.
You’re not far wrong Bingo. According to the Guardian today
‘Pop fans will debate whether Williams is truly “greater” than the Beatles, though he certainly reached his record tally quicker: 29 years versus the 37 years it took the Beatles’ to notch up their 15 No 1s.’
I think this new development ends the debate, frankly. The people have spoken and their verdict is that if you didn’t write and perform Rock DJ you need to sit down and have a long think about yourself.
Our former Leaderene, the occasionally esteemed Heppo, has had a good old ‘man shouting at bus-stop’ – style rant about the matter…

He makes a great point. In a more competitive era such as today the Beatles would definitely have spent less time at number one.
As it was, they more or less got a free pass – people simply had no other options available to them. It was that or stare at bomb sites.
Only makes Robbie’s achievement all the more striking when you really think about it.
Not on Instagram, but we have had recent occurrences of a band like Manic Street Preachers reaching no. 1 week of release and then falling out of the top 100 week 2 probably selling a total of about 10,000 copies. Weeks on chart anyway was always a better idea of how well an album was doing, look at Rumours or Dark Side of the Moon or Abba Gold spending decades in the charts
Williams has spent an impressive 439 weeks in the top 40 Albums chart, the Beatles have managed 1137 weeks
