Here’s a detail from an LP released in 1971, a year which, according to David Hepworth, is rock’s annus mirabilis. All you have to do is identify the artist and album title.
As an added incentive to enter, my very good friend @h-p-saucecraft has generously donated a cash prize of 50 Thai Baht (an amount slightly less than one pound sterling) to the lucky winner.
This may seem difficult at first sight, but there’s a massive clue in the picture.
That’s much nicer and brighter! You know, I think Heinz missed a trick by not having the soup tins different colours according to the flavours. You know, like the crisp packets? You could have had red for tomato, brown for oxtail, cream for chicken and maybe gold for lentil. You get the idea.
Anyway, what were we talking about? Oh yes, 1971 was it? Is it Budgie?
This is the BB Blunder album, back cover. It’s a piece a shit, about the same as the second Blossom Toes album, and nowhere near as great as the first Blossie’s album, which they’ve consigned to the junk.
Yebbut, yebbut…see above. I could have claimed the baths, but I chose not to because that’s the sort of guy I am. I wanted to see if this one would run and run. But you, sir…
You SAY you knew what it was, Mike. But fine words butter no parsnips. Even if you did – and I stress that even if – what kind of quiz is it that gets two correct responses in the first three comments? A quiz that’s TOO EASY BY HALF. Johnny’s latest has me stumped, though but.
I’m impressed, I don’t mind admitting. I expected this one to run and run.
Yes, it’s the B.B. Blunder album Worker’s Playtime from 1971. Often dubbed “the third Blossom Toes album” because some members had been in that band, it was as you say, not nearly as good as the “Toes” (as absolutely no one called them) albums but the cover design (a spoof of “The Radio Times”) was rather amusing at least.
What interested me most was the first Blossom Toes LP We Are Ever So Clean hidden in the rubbish bag and I got to wondering about LP sleeves featuring other album covers within the artwork. Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home is a classic example of course, but I may dig out some others before this thread disappears into the grey dawn of indifference.
I hope we don’t get audited by the Lotteries and Gaming Commission. It looks very bad when the sponsor of the competition ends up winning the cash prize, after all.
It is indeed Man’s Winos, Rhinos & Lunatics and here’s the full cover. The detail I posted is in the middle of the sleeve under the “Wi” of “Winos”. A little further to the right can be seen the blue sleeve of Man guitarist Deke Leonard’s 1973 solo LP Iceberg.
On the floor, under the telescope and next to the rubber plant is Bo Diddley’s 1958 LP Go Bo Diddley
It was the not American or English that gave it away, Johnny. This meant it was either Man, Budgie, or the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. And as I didn’t see any budgerigars wearing bullet belts riding horses or clowns then I knew it had to be Man. Simple, really.

Go for it!
sandals with socks
gotta be English.
They may look like our national dress footwear Junior, but closer examination shows them to be slip-on loafers with a metal decoration on the front.
I think you’ll find, Junior, that those are rather stylish loafers with metal bits on them, rather than sandals.
I happen to know this, but I’ll keep quiet. But yes, most definitely English.
Is that a rare white label Heinz chicken soup tin?
Going back even further, they looked like this in 1953

See below, Hawkers. That cash bonanza is going on a pad thai with a fried egg on top and all the trimmings as soon as I get my hands on it.
If you’d like to send me your bank account details, I’ll make the cash transfer ASAP
That Pad Thai sounds nice.
Do you have any Budgie records Johnny? I’m trying to work out where you drew the line in the early 70s.
With Budgie I tend to stick to the early MCA LPs. After the move to A&M they tended to become generic.
If I were to be really harsh I’d say you only really need the first two or three.
1971 Budgie
1972 Squawk
1973 Never Turn Your Back on a Friend
1974 In for the Kill!
1975 Bandolier

How do I claim my 50 baths? Can I do a bank transfer from my Thai account into my Thai account?
I had all these albums on original vinyl, you know. Oh yes.
Try harder, Johnny.
Quiz over. Nothing to see here. Move along please.

It’s difficult to see why those guys didn’t make it big.

Some cynical people may cry “fix”.
Here’s another one. Much easier this time, so the cash prize is only 25 Thai Baht (*conditions apply).
Here we see Elvis’s Rock & Roll No.2 (1957) and the debut Quicksilver Messenger Service LP from 1968. But on which LP can this detail be found.
Sorry about the poor quality, but…

Is it Ginger Baker’s Airforce?
‘fraid not, no.
Is it Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman”?
That old chestnut!
Gizza clue, mate. What album is it?
It’s American, it was recorded in the seventies …
Only 50% of that is correct
It’s American, then.
Not American.
Not English either.
Recorded in the seventies, then! Hoo boy! This is fun!
OK, sure. The name of the album is…
Here, hang on a minute. You must think I’m daft!
Is it something by Patto? Or Topo-D-Bill? Or Phyne Thanquz?
No.
Who?
And
Who?
You’ve never heard of NWOBHM legends Phyne Thanquz?
Topo D Bill = “Legs” Larry Smith, nicht wahr?
Oh, it’s THAT Phyne Thanquz?
Let me narrow it down for you @h-p-saucecraft – it’s from 1974
I’ve got it: It’s Rhinos, Winos & Lunatics by Man.
Well done that, er, man.

Very well reasoned. I thought someone might pick up on that.
I also thought the rhino horn right in the middle of the picture might be a giveaway.
I knew this but thought I’d leave it for Mt Thep to reclaim some of his cred.
These middle of the night contests are such fun!
We’re just keeping ourselves amused until the adults get back
Do a detail from a Celtic Woman album, so Mr Tsgi can join in!
I’m just listening to a “recorded on Seamus’ iPhone” bootleg of Celtic Woman Albert Hall” – a belter!
Taking Mt theP by strategy.
Mt. Thep – the highest peak in Brisbane?
Little-known Rock Fact: Deke Leonard’s home-made van der Graaf generator won a school science competition!
