I’m planning on descending upon the Bristol branch of FOPP in the morning for a retail therapy Bruceathon session – I’ve nothing after Tunnel Of Love and I want to catch up a bit. If anyone else is in the vicinity who can advise my purchasing strategy or maybe even mock it, I’d be glad to see them.

Wrecking Ball is a must. Tracks was recently reissued and should be pretty cheap. The Promise is great but is really Darkness Vol 2.
Yeah, I picked up Tracks recently for £12 – what a steal! Wrecking Ball will be on my short-list, ta!
Absolutely. Was just logging in to say get Wrecking Ball. Highly wreckommended.
Went to Fopp and Rise last Saturday. There’s a fab art supplies shop (Cass Art) now in the old Fopp, on the other side of the street.
If I make it that far tomorrow orning I’ll be the harassed looking chap with three kids in tow, and probably nursing something of a hangover given that I am about to attend the Devizes sub-branch of CAMRA’s Christmas crawl.
Strewth! If you surface at all before 3 pm I’ll be very impressed.
As it turned out, and much to my surprise I was in Fopp by around 11.30 – departed a few quid lighter having acquired some DVDs for the kids, the new ELO (the boy insisted) and a blues compilation. Last night’s beer intake was restrained as it turned out – a case of quality over quantity.
Well done that man! We missed each other by minutes. Glad you were able to make it, and hope the ELO delivers – I was tempted…
I even managed to stagger up the hill to Rise later in the day. We blasted out the ELO on the way home. Boy likes it more than me I think but am hoping it will be a grower.
Magic is essential. The best ‘non-classic’ Bruce album. And Long Walk Home always makes me cry like a baby.
Ooh, ooh, get the Seeger Sessions too.
Another vote for Magic
Working On A Dream is worth a listen.
And I’m prepared to be corrected on this one, but I do like Lucky Town (certainly in preference to the “partner album” Human Touch)
Working on a Dream? No!
Well, I like it.
Or at least did – haven’t heard it a good few years.
Admittedly, the endorsement is based on “My Lucky Day” and the title track, plus an assortment of “bits & pieces” recollections – I must go and listen again
It has a few decent tracks (inc My Lucky Day), but I’m not a fan of the title track.
Best 3 after TOL are :
1) Magic
2) The Rising
3) Devils and Dust
Seeger Sessions, Tom Joad, Lucky Town and Wrecking Ball are decent with some weaker tracks.
Avoid Working on a Dream, Human Touch and High Hopes, some of his poorest work.
I should say it is worth getting High Hopes if it includes Born in the USA live in London DVD.
Tom Joad. Only Tom Joad.
The Rising. Some brilliant songs on there. Infused with 9/11 etc which adds to its power. I’m interested in the responses though – don’t have anything after it.
Aha! I shall be in Brizzle next weekend. Can you send me a complete list of all the charity shops I should search out. Thank you.
I’m only in town every now and then, and my knowledge of shopping in Brizzle isn’t at all up to date, I’m afraid.
Today, wandering up the shabby pale shadow of its former self that is Park Street these days while waiting for FOPP to open, I did spot a very chic, posh Oxfam “books & music” shop at the top of the hill, opposite The Wills Building. It was still shut at 9:15, so I had to settle for a good peer through the window. Lots of really top quality hardbacks of venerable and varied vintages, and an enticing rack full of original orange Penguins, but I couldn’t see their prices. No doubt they are monstrous.
Sad to see Park Street on its uppers. The Guild remains, but few others of the decent shops I remember from student days. The Examination Hall, where I proudly watched the GLW receive her masters degree, is now a fecking bistro. I ask you.
Here’s my haul. Devils & Dust wasn’t on the shelves this morning, but I’ve ordered it, along with the Seeger 2 disc.
You’ve done very well indeed there.
The Rising and Tom Joad, in particular, are absolutely superb. The former is a car journey record if ever I heard one. Enjoy.
Thanks to all suggesters; much appreciated.
I’m off now to chop & stack some logs, then fill up the Chevrolet, pull on my least battered jeans and an old leather jacket, tuck a scarf in my back pocket and drive to the game with my girl and my buddies, after which we might shoot some pool and have a beer.
Oh crikey! You’ll miss the shove ha’penny beano at the Bell and Compasses.
