I was out for my walk on Southampton Common yesterday morning, and I have never seen it looking so dry. I thought the pond and lake were in a sorry state this time last year, but they’re even worse now. Clearly the only solution is to harness the power of the Afterword and compile a suitable playlist to summon forth the rains!
Any suggestions?

My first one:

I don’t think this will be enough from Carole King!

Be careful what you wish for…
With thanks to Hendrix (and just a bit of punctuation): “Rainy day? Dream away”
Obvious one for Afterworders
Another obvious one for Afterworders…
And of course…
Not bad for a bunch of Oasis copyists.
The pitter patter of a rain dance is what you need – Fred and Ginger are here to help:
I’ll put some suede footwear on. Or any new item of clothing that may have cost a bit.
That usually triggers my own private monsoon for the duration I’m out of doors in any of the above.
I donned my new suede boots to go grocery shopping this morning. Not a hint of drizzle, not a single drop of rain hit the bone dry ground and this is Cymru!
No use, I’ve tried going out in sneakers but the clouds refused to burst. Getting bored of this now.
My favourite blogger name is in the house!
🙂
And of course this:
If we go right back to 1601, we get this song from Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”:
“When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.”
Here’s Elvis Costello and John Harle doing a nice version from 1996.

@davebigpicture what was the video? It says that it is not available where I am. Asking as a caulkhead.
Island in the Rain by The Men They Couldn’t Hang.
Paul Simmonds and Swill were from the Southampton area.
Thanks
Nice
Blue Pearl – Naked In The Rain. (for the sake of my neighbours, I might keep my Speedos on)
Maybe you need Sister Mahalia’s help
Attempting to lever Ver Quo into any playlist … Rain
Only love can make it rain
The Rain God played Cropredy last night. I wasn’t there, but even he could only summon up a few darker clouds, and, allegedly, an occasional spit from the heavens.
Here’s a song he did with the old band,
Plenty of one half of the title, not enough of the other
This might help:
This might not:
Oh please don’t stop getting high.
Its spitting!….
This’ll do it…
cannot believe this hasn’t been posted yet. Kate Bush – Cloudbusting.
A true story btw.
Hot sticky scenes, you know what I mean
Like a desert sun that burns my skin
I’ve been waiting for her for so long
Open the sky, and let her come down
Here comes the rain
This is a photo of Reading Festival Site today, compared to 2025

(caveat: it’s not my photo and the 2025 photo may have some colour enhancement as the grass looks greener than Royal Birkdale)
Yeah, look how green that big shed in the top right corner was. Paint doesn’t fade that fast.
One of The Troggs’ finest moments, speaking for us all:
By ‘eck, that’s gorgeous!
And I have a feeling I’m going a The Move rabbit hole for the rest of the evening. Two that seem appropriate right now:
Quite
I saw yer Cure in Berlin a few weeks back and its sent me scuttling back to Faith, Seventeen Seconds and Disintegration, from whence this maudlin rain dance comes from
From whence? Bad boy!
Here’s Israel Nash on a boat in Amsterdam, in the rain singing Pray For Rain.
Just appoint Dennis Howell as the Minister for Drought. That’ll open the heavens
One from the Canadian cousins…
I felt 2 drops of rain this morning, but that was it, I fear this thread has fallen far short of expectations.
It has so far, but on the bright side it has almost brought me half a hamper!
Just back from Cropredy RT was playing Friday night he is of course a rain god. It rained on Friday I counted each individual raindrop on the disabled stage, FIVE.
Back home from Cropredy and went outside to water the veg that had been neglected for five days.
Of course it rained soon after.
Relax, folks: whenever my dear old dad puts his gazebo up, it starts to rain. It went up at the weekend, so my advice is to prepare the flood defences.
It worked: I was awoken at 1am by hammering on the shed roof, but it only lasted for a couple of hours.
The weeds look extra vivid green amongst the brown grass this morning.
It’s been raining here in The Tropical Socialist Republic of Wales. Not a lot but it’s decidedly murky looking so I may have to wear my mackintosh to go grocery shopping.
I might even wear a cap!
Terry Hall advised “try wearing a cap”. Perhaps it rained a lot in Coventry?
A beautifully precise, measured vocal delivery over a stellar backing band. Second track from an album of terrific songs and a lovely warm production that never fails to hit the mark.
We can live in hope!
A friend sent a rose bush for my wife’s birthday, it’s called “Bring Me Sunshine.” It has of course rained since it arrived.
Well, it worked! Well done everyone.
Temperatures have returned to sane levels here in the deserts of Berkshire.
I can feel a breeze around the shins. Will oontemplate putting on long trousers tomorrow, for the first time since early June. I might have to go on a refresher course.
Yep, the high pressure “heat dome” over much of Europe that’s been repelling all boarders for the last 10 weeks seems to have dispersed. Now we get “normal” sunshine and rain, and frontal weather systems are back, baby.
Give it a week (if that) and you lot will be complaining there’s too much rain…….
Why wait.
It’s bloody wet and sodding cold here in Cymru. The sheep are soggy and the slate is as grey as a ghost’s sigh.
