Funnily enough I was playing this to the boy last night and told him in the review in the NME BITD they said “at the end of “Stargazer” the Berlin Philharmonic comes in sounding for all the world like a rampaging synthesizer – it’s amazing what you can do with an orchestra these days”…
Great responses so far. I feel a playlist coming on…
The closer on their last album for a decade and a half, this is The Afghan Whigs at their sultry, sleazy, menacing best. It’s feral soul music that dissolves into jazz skronk but never loses the groove. I love this band.
“Songs with epic endings.”
The first song that popped into my head when I read that was this little gem by Old Mr Fried under a Giant Tortoise Shell himself, Julian Cope:
I think this is terrific – a 1969 Jethro Tull B-side – 6+ minutes, the words run out long before halfway. Thinking off the cuff just now, the play out brings to mind that Elbow lighter-waver thing about opening the curtains – one relentless cyclical riff that gives the impression of building and building.
Saving someone some typing…
Its got to be Jungleland by Bruuuuce
First thing that came to mind, one of my favourite Suede tunes:
Chvrches ‘Tether’
Faithless ‘Insomnia’
Bloody hell they were good live.
Well, obviously this…
1985
Comfortably Numb – Earls Court 1980
Beta Band – Dry The Rain
The Beatles – I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
Dire Straits – Sultans Of Swing (from Alchemy Live)
It’s no wonder Hal had to go. Look at him. What a honey.
….er…. according to a woman I heard say that.
HHHHUH! See the ball game last night? What a game!
Hell of a game
They always play Jerusalem at funerals
Erm, Stairway, obvs.
And Ritchie Blackmore’s finest moment. Easily the best use of an orchestral arrangement to bring a rock anthem to a climax.

Ooo, Stargazer, eh? No, THIS is Stargazer of the epic ending:
Cardiacs, Dirty Boy
….wins the white carnation…..not so much epic as transcendent……
…and this one….
Not enough Stackridge on this site lately!
I seem to remember the title of this splendid piece is the punchline of a joke about the Pope, but maybe someone can put me right.
Sax about to go off a cliff at the end.

Indeed – the Bill Stokes role was interchangeable, insert any local hero/regional stereotype i.e. ‘Who’s that up there with Geordie?’
Ryan Adams ‘Magnolia Mountain’

Yep enjoyed that will do a dip into Spotify to check out more….always curious as to how many others play our posts!
dEUS – Instant Street
Live, 2007, rather than the exemplary studio version. Skip the vocals if you like, concentrate on the crescending instrumental
It’s a long wait but worth it…
Allow me another one….
The Ruts – It Was Cold
..or this.
The ~Tubes – White Punks On Dope
