*It’s harder than you think to come up with a blog title – but it’s the best I can do.
I was listening to Janet Jackson the other day – yeah? So what!? – anyway, this song came up “Someday is tonight” and it joined my occasional list of songs that sound like they should have been written by someone else. In this case, Green Gartside. There’s a lot of heavy breathing and rumpo-related sauciness but get to the chorus and I can imagine very clearly a Scritti Politti song. Can you?
Other contenders Peter Skellern You’re a Lady (c/b Pet Shop Boys) and Walking on the Milky Way (c/b Oasis).
“It’s yer old mate, Fluff, here, and at no. 1, amazingly their first no. 1 single, The Who with a Pete Townshend composition, “Fire Brigade.””
… “Cast your mind back ten years to the girl … etc. etc.”
I remember thinking that Santana had got back in the charts the first time i heard Gary Moore play Parisienne Walkways, being similar to Europa,a track from Moonflower, which came out two years before and which i still play regularly..
The whole of Santana’s career could be said to be based on Peter Green ‘s The Super-Natural, found on the John Mayall Bluesbreakers’ album A Hard Road.
A lot of truth in that as regards his guitar sound. But don’t forget those latin rhythmns which are also a very big part of his sound.
As well as Black Magic Woman, he also did a cover of Oye Como Va, a 1963 Tito Puente hit that all the latinos would have known.

This is how it sounded before Carlos rocked it up. Very fine too!
Nice track on the Abraxas Pool album which Neal Schon plays guitar and not Carlos….not on Spotify as yet and hard to find!
I’ve always thought that Moonflower should have been recognised as one of the best live albums ever.
Justin Townes Earle has a new album out called Kids In The Street. The title is a nod to Bruce Springsteen, whose song, Racing In The Streets, Earle has covered for charity.
I think the second track, Maybe A Moment, could have been one of Bruce’s. Listen out for the Roy Bittan-style organ.
Nice track, yet another artist who i havent explored yet….looking at Wiki he seems to have inherited his Dads addiction issues as well as his musical chops…seems to be reformed now thank god.Yes definate Bruce vibe on that, lovely mellow tone in his voice.
On first hearing of Back Of My Hand by The Jags, I was convinced it was Elvis Costello.
The best songs The Stones never wrote:
Dandy Warhols – Bohemian Like You
Primal Scream – Movin On Up
Primal Scream – Rocks
Primal Scream – Country Girl
Also Lucinda Williams – Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings.
Comin’ on strong – Broken English (not sure of the name – mid 80s minor hit)
I’ll just copy and paste my post from the “Play me some new” thread, where it didn’t really fit in…
Here are proof x 2 that Gerry Rafferty really is alive and well:
Aaron Lee Tasjan – Dime
And here you have to wait until the chorus to hear it; Good Harvest – Charly
Focus ‘House of the King’ (Jethro Tull)
The Mixtures ‘Pushbike Song’ (Mungo Jerry)
That German band (eihtfriehtlieht or something) who had a mid 80s hit that sounded like it MUST be Paul McCartney – perhaps someone can help me out here?
That was Freiheit – Keeping the Dream Alive
I thought it was a bit like Jeff Lynne/ELO too – obviously very big Macca fans who write songs heavily influenced by him.
Meredith Brooks’s Bitch – frequently misattributed (see below) to Alanis Morissette:
Its Ian McNabb really………
Ryan Adams has been channeling Bruce quite a bit lately
“What’s that? Mason Williams wants too much money for us to use Classical Gas? Well, get Roy Wood on the blower and ask if we can use that track he wrote for ELO’s first album.”
an in the same vein:
The Cure go New Order:
I agree – but I would have gone for The Walk. Very Blue Monday-esque, I thought.
Agreed. That Bob fella had form.
Two from Nuggets
Is this the HJHs? No, it’s The Knickerbockers – Lies
Next track – is this Bob Dylan? No, it’s Mouse – A Public Execution

I’ll Wait from Van Halen’s 1984 has the same keyboard structure and sound as Madonna’s Like a Virgin.
