Arriving to me too late for my AW Top 20 album choices, nonetheless I felt some may appreciate the track that led to my purchase of the album. (‘Uptown Fank’, pop-pickers!) Perfect for those moments when the Sawdoctors are just too downright smooth and sophisticated. And, given my mother came from the island, as did Trump’s, as, actually, so did @IainS , this is, indeed, how they do it in the Western Isles….

Aldous spellbound me at Roskilde with this song. Terrifyingly personal and intimate
Somewhat reminiscent of John Grant back in his Queen Of Denmark days – right down to the celeb name check:
(Shura – Princess Leia)
Try watching/listening to this without dropping your jaw.
FKA Twigs – Cellophane
Stone me. No wonder you wear those gloves.
On a serious point, it seems to have become absolutely compulsory for (in particular) black female singers to get their kit off all the time. “Musical talent is all very well luv, but you’d better have a decent bod for the vids”. In the meantime, young male singer songwriters have reached new heights (depths?) of physical unpleasantness.
I’m starting to wonder if the music industry is a bit sexist.
It’s all her own work. There are no co-writers for the song, which concerns the very public break up with her boyfriend, and she is the lead producer. When she wrote it, a visual image came to her. She spent the best part of a year learning to pole dance, although she started her career as a professional dancer. She’d also just recovered from surgery to remove large uterine fibroids. Her body is clearly very important to her, especially as a means to express herself as an ‘artist’. Huang directed the video, known for his work with Björk, but FKA is definitely in charge. Is she being manipulative or manipulated? It’s something of a conundrum, second only to the Jenny Lewis album ‘crop shot’ and her perfectly positioned mole.
Lizzo keeps Pop music fun.
Juice
I’ll second that.
I give you my favourite track from my favourite album of the year. Ladies and gentleman, it’s the forever wonderful (and particularly so this time) Kirsty McGee!
(Starts quietly, as John Peel would have said)
Sharon Von Etton – No One’s Easy To Love
Stunning I think. Powerful, driving song.
Seventeen is also a strong contender.
As it’s Christmas – and to bump this thread to encourage participation – I’m gifting myself an extra choice..
