Trans: “I can’t believe Man’s ‘Back Into The Future’ didn’t make it into that Top 100 Prog tracks list!”
Baron Harkonnen says
Hmmm, Man, great band. Great track Bis.
Ahh_Bisto says
Yup it is a great track. Love the driving percussion (Can-like)
Vulpes Vulpes says
You should check out The Neutrons – the first track on ‘Black Hole Star’ is a nodding, swaying motorik monster. Play it loud!
Ahh_Bisto says
Ooh yeah, loving this track. Funky motorik with harmonies – like a lost Super Furry Animals/Julian Cope track
Moose the Mooche says
Pretty surprised to find Keith Harris and Orville on the list. Brave…
Uncle Wheaty says
Their second album is a prog classic.
The Orville rap on the side long song “Orville’s Journey Into The Mystic” is a thing of beauty IMHO.
Moose the Mooche says
Orville: It’s too late to stop now.
Keith: No it isn’t!
Orville: Yes it is!
…etc….
Uncle Wheaty says
Yebbut it went deeper than that.
His 45 second piece on transgender green ducks at 11.50 is up there with the best green duck raps ever.
Moose the Mooche says
Green duck raps… wonderful with hoi sin.
Uncle Wheaty says
The Green Duck death scene at the end of the video is awful though.
I had to cover my eyes.

Baron Harkonnen says
I must love Prog, got lots of those songs including Orville`s `Dance Of The Shrouded Lunatic`.
PaulVincent says
Wonderful stuff! Thanks, Wheaty!
PaulVincent says
…though once again it indicates how dispiritingly overlooked the Canterbury-esque bands were by the majority of prog fans. I’ve got 51 of these 100 tracks, but only Nine Feet Underground is Canterbury. Canterbury prog and the rest – two musics divided by a common label, eh?
Uncle Wheaty says
I am surprised at the amount of Marillion tracks there. I am an old school fan of Fish era Marillion and never really went beyond the first couple of Hogarth albums.
Maybe I need another look.
Baron Harkonnen says
The Marillion fan base is well organised which may explain their many entries. I like latter day Marillion but they ain’t that good. I agree with Paul Vincent Re: the Canterbury scene.
Vulpes Vulpes says
Hmmm. Too much Marillion, (way) too much Opeth and “prog metal” in general, too much second generation not-quite-good-enough-I’m-afraid stuff in general. Good Dream Theater choice. No Italian prog at all, unless I blinked and missed it, a serious omission. No Egg? Come off it guys. Quite a jolly lark, these lists, though.

Not so much “The Weekend Starts Here!” – more a case of “The Golden Age Stops Here.”
Gotta feel sorry for “A Day In The Life,” presumably fulfilling the same thankless role that “You Really Got Me” does for Heavy Metal.
Dodger-tastic.
Uncle Wheaty says
A Day In The Life will never be considered Prog.
Trying to shoehorn the best pop band of the 1960s into a new genre that only really started once they were technically dead as a band is sad….so I would take that one out.
Prog properly started in 1969 in the Court of The Crimson King.
Baron Harkonnen says
I have to disagree Uncle, A Day In The Life is definitely Prog with a big P. I love and admire KC but I reckon they were beaten to Prog’s kick start by the s/t Vanilla Fudge LP. OOAA
John Walters says
Tomorrow Never Knows also deserves an honourable mention.
Loved this list though after the dispiriting 50 classic songs of the 90’s.
Baron Harkonnen says
Forgot all about TNN, a true Prog Great Tune.
Kaisfatdad says
I have to blow Canterbury’s horn here.
Soft Machine’s debut album from 68 was definitely prog.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7y_pA-L2ww
as was Caravan’s from 69
Both bands had a great ear for a memorable pop song. Their early material has stood the test of time.
Uncle Wheaty says
Definitely Prog.
Not sure I need to hear much more though!
dai says
I own 10, surprised it was that high (mostly Pink Floyd), but any list that has A Day on the Life at 84 can’t be a good one.
Baron Harkonnen says
Because it`s there or isn`t high enogh.
dai says
The latter
Jackthebiscuit says
I must admit that I was surprised that Stargazer was not on the list.
Perhaps it is regarded more as heavy metal than prog, but regardless, Ritchie Blackmores finest moment AFAIAC.
StuartReeves says
Great though it is, I wouldn’t call Stargazer prog. Paranoid Android on the other hand…
Declan says
Nice format for the list, with everything readily clickable. Got much of the 70s stuff on vinyl, quite taken with some newer bands like Liquid Tension Experiment (#74) and Haken (#68, #59) — to the extent of recording tracks onto MiniDisc in order to play them on a decent rig at realistic volume, presently. Plenty more to discover as well.
Would have had some Mahavishnu, Art Zoyd, Can, Joni Mitchell, Magazine, Talk Talk, Santana, Family, Return to Forever, Living Colour, Hawkwind, and (yes Vulpes) Egg in there myself. Obviously instead of Marillion.
Lando Cakes says
I’m slightly surprised to find that I know most of these well. My misspent youth…
