Yesterday evening, somewhat bruised and cowed by a punishing week of 21st century nonsense, we made the pilgrimage to St. Georges once again, anticipating a special evening of music from the Rheingans Sisters.
We were not disappointed. The bruising was healed. The 21st century fell away and a timeless place of intensely involving wonder filled its empty absence.
What an extraordinary treat last night at St. Georges was!
The sisters played us their newest album from start to finish, delivering a tour-de-force that surpassed even the contents of its little silver disc that’s been in constant play at home for weeks now.
The entire gig lasted around 4 minutes, as far as I can recall. I was lost in the music, and time stood still.
With great delight I started to hear faint echoes of everything that I imagined they’d taken and poured into this album, all the possible references my ears seemed to find, all the musical influences I thought we must surely share, and then I heard the truth that really mattered at the heart of this piece; the sister’s own fantastic musicality and their voices shining through it all and making it their own.
This album, and therefore this tour, really is a wonderful and complete triumph.
The tour continues, and if you have a soul that could do with refreshment, if you have ears and the ability to dive in and listen, then go and see them. You will find a deep immersion in things older than today and yet vitally new, things that repay your attentive investment with breath-taking delights. Things beautiful, things glorious, things human yet timeless. Things to make your heart sing.
Marvel at the music, and smile at its dancing, shining delivery. Breathe it in.
Taster in the comments.
The audience:
128 souls. Room for twice as many again. Two hundred and fifty lost opportunities to share in the wyrde and inspiring world of the sisters in music.
It made me think..
How lucky I was to have been there.
What a remarkable review, V V – I felt that we briefly glimpsed your own soul, encased in your reactions.
Blimey Vulpes, stirring stuff. Along with @niallb’s impassioned review of Springsteen at Co-op Live your piece on the Rheingans Sisters is testament to the healing power of music in these troubled times. To my shame I’ve never heard of them before but will seek out their album.
Loved reading this. Palpable sense of that peculiar buzz that only live music can deliver 👌
Introduced to them by @thecheshirecat for which I am deeply grateful.
Shan’t be able to see them this tour alas.
Wonderful review.
We are a small but growing happy band of followers. Welcome to the clique, Wolfie.
I too can’t make this tour, as the Manchester gig clashes with Chester FF, but will catch them at Sidmouth.
Hard to see how anyone could NOT listen to that album after that. It’s on my weekend list.
That’s a lovely bit of heartfelt writing. Their music is not for me, but bravo for sharing what was clearly a wonderful experience.
Wonderful, inspiring review! I’m buying the album.
If any further encouragement sought……
