Quite a sweet story about Pet Shop Boys. I’d forgotten that Janice Long is no longer with us, so it has that PSBian tinge of sadness. Bless her.

What a wonderful find! A much needed sunshine story in these tormented turnip times.
Yes a real turnip for the books
Tell us about the Swedes, K
Neil had better not try any kidnapping or blackmail – that typewriter’s a dead giveaway.
A shocker isn’t it? I find that quite endearing.
I’m sorry. I read this as an extraordinarily bland letter. It’s hardly touching any kind of emotion at all.
It’s the fact of the letter and its curious survival that appeals to me.
Are you saying the Pet Shop Boys are anodyne??
I think the letter does pack an emotional punch largely due to the death of Janice Long. The band hadn’t yet “made it” and Tennant can’t have been at all sure that fame would come at all. The letter is a sincere note of thanks to a DJ who was supporting them. It also provides evidence of Long’s talent for spotting great new music. “Interestingly” it also tells us that Tennant wasn’t using his Smash Hits contacts to promote the song. He wrote the letter because she had wondered on air whether it was the same person who was writing in Smash Hits.
And as he confessed later, “I wouldn’t normally do that kind of thing”.
Ithangyew.
It’s alright.
Left to his own devices he probably would.
The picture of Elvis – staring straight at the dodger himself – is saying:
“Pop Star, boy? You come to my premises you do what you have to do, the drainage, the typing, the plumping, whatever, I’ll sign an autograph for your nephew… erm… the door’s thatta way.”
How on earth did the picture on the wall, the ultimate Pop Star, mutate into such a lesser form of the species in the dire?
Plumping aside, I’d have thought, as the bespectacled writer of a series of catchy hit singles, NT is more in the tradition of Buddy Holly than the handsome, hip thrusting, former truck driver..
Best try not to let it worry you, there’s plenty of other decades to get your teeth into.
In a similar vein, a photo of JFK on the way to his assassination has been found in a copy of Bachman Turner Overdrive’s Anthology bought in a thrift store. Seems to have no great value. What a difference 20 minutes makes.
