Yep Grime, the latest sound sensation!
I left YouTube running last Saturday after listening to the above Kano track (which is a better song on the same subject matter as “Summertime” by DJ Jazzy “Jeff”, kids). Next thing I know I am totally sucked in and searching the web for decent examples if the genre. Alas I have no idea where to start & don’t want to get any old rubbish.
So please post some examples of classic Grime. Go as far back as you like, I certainly won’t be criticising your hip quotient… TIA

I have just listened to that and I have never heard a Grime track before. In fact I didn’t even know what Grime was.
I can see the talent on show in terms of the word smithing but it seems more like a talented rant rather than music.
Not for me.

Woohoo – this is the thread we need.
I’ll start us off with my favourite ever Grime tune, one of my top 100 songs of all time, and a former Bingo Little karaoke speciality: Oi! By More Fire Crew.
Uncle Wheaty says
Wow! Respect to anyone that can do karaoke to that!
It just seems like a noise to me and not music.
But I tried!
Bingo Little says
Can’t ask for more than that – cheers, Uncle.

I was initially irritated by the timbe of his voice but as it continued I liked the track more and more.
Still not convinced it’s my sort of thing, but on the whole an enjoyable venture outside my usual parameters.
An “up” from me.

This is a great tune:

One of my favourite tunes of recent years, in any genre…

I bet this one is fairly karaoke-proof.

Before Dizzee Rascal was a Feat. For Calvin Harris and duetting with Robbie, he was one of the first grime stars to break through to a mainstream audience.

This one, for me:

Early Dizzee is all pretty good

I have a lot of difficulty with music genres, as there is often so much blurring of the lines. I find that a lot of it is based on snobbery anyway, whereby people get so embroiled in arguing whether a song/album belongs to the genre they are defending that they forget to consider whether the song/album is any good. Having said that, I order my CD collection loosely in genres, although I then get stuck with people like DJ Shadow, who could fit on most shelves. Anyway, this is my excuse if I recommend UK rap albums rather than grime ones!
I have spent the past couple of months listening to a load of UK rap and grime though, so I think I am beginning to tell the difference. I particularly like Verb T and Fliptrix, who I think belong to the rap side of the equation, but the (I think) grime albums I particularly like are:
Integrity> by Jme (or JME, I can’t work out which it is!)
Konnichiwa and Greatest Hits by Skepta
Key To The Game 3 and Soundtrack To The Struggle by Lowkey
I bought a couple of compilations at the weekend which sound great on first listen and should hopefully point me to other new acts. They’re imaginatively titled Grime 2015 and Grime 2016 and are mixed by a couple of prominent DJs in the field apparently (although I can’t remember their names). Might be a good place to start though.
MC Escher says
This is what I was after, thank you so far folks. I will definitely have Boy In Da Corner and Skepta’s stuff.
The other one that stood out for me that Saturday was this one, by Stormzy (“Know Me From”):
There must be other yout’ (sorry) who visit these ends (sorry again) who can join in and post up some tunes?
Bingo Little says
Another old one…

I’ve been keeping a bewildered eye on Blackpool Grime. It’s all these kids in Blackpool who make very professional sounding but terribly offensive diss songs about each other. I don’t suppose you could really call it good but it’s definitely fascinating. Whether it can ever evolve beyond the childish beefs is another matter.
I won’t post any of the vids (because, you know, Scarface) but a search of YouTube will do it.
MC Escher says
Hey, don’t let negative comments put you off dude (although you can in this case by the above description 😉 ). If I listened to negative comments I’d never post anything!
Leicester Bangs says
Too late, I’m already nursing a terrible grudge. The beef is on. My upcoming Leicester Grime track is set to make Nas vs Jay-Z look like child’s play.
