I’m sitting, looking out the window at the snow swirling out of a steel-grey sky – and I’m assailed with a very northern sense of wintery melancholy…time to feed it some Sibelius…

Musings on the byways of popular culture
…where’s @Kaisfatdad when you need him…
Lovely and sunny here! And -22C
Nice!
Will this do the trick?
A song called Snow, with a very snowy slide show.
Very snowy and wonderfully sunny here today. But several degrees below zero. Nippy!
I like that very much…
Quite warm here now, only -2. Has been -12 in the daytime. Beautiful sunny days lately, the warmth of the sun is making itself felt, spring feels nearer. Today we skied across a lake and back, good tracks had been prepared. There were a few fishermen who’d drilled holes to try and catch something. We came home and ate semlor with coffee then watched the womens biathlon world championships. No swedish medal this time but they won the womens skicross gold. A very swedish kind of winter day. Plenty of snow on the ground for weeks now.
is my go to snow song
“Video unavailable “…what was it?
Snow Falls from Lark Rise to Candleford.
I’ll get me coat
but hark! Has the errant Kid redeemed himself?
I have always liked this.
Let’s have one of their own
tell you what, Sal, as it’s you…
Great minds, @Kid-Dynamite…
I have always liked this.
Melancholy and cobwebs be gone …
(possibly the wrong type of snow (according to British Rail))
“Video unavailable”…what was it?
Sorry, try this later iteration, still the mighty John Tams:
Oops, mine was the earlier video unavailable, but lots of crossover appeal, i’m sure.
That was the fabulous sound of The Sabs with Snowblind.
Coming next on Radio RD, more tracks that fit a given theme …
… and here’s Hoyt Axton to see us up to drivetime with … Snowblind Friend …
I think Kate deserves a place here.
As does Serge.

This is from a 1976 concept album “L’Homme à tête de chou.” which deals with a man who has an affair with a young woman, Marilou. When she two-times him, her murders her.
Which is why she is under the snow!
oh God, I’ve come over all you-know-who with finding a very different version
I’m usually such a stickler for the original piano versions too.
KFD – I like a man who is driven
This captures the joyful anticipation of the white stuff.
I was thinking of that song immediately. I watch White Christmas every year and love it.
Ahmad Jamal Trio – Snowfall
.
Donald Fagen – Snowbound

Hats off to Ana Alcaide for making the most out of this unexpected weather.

“Most artists serenade the women in the audience.
Only Prince can get the women to serenade him.”
(InkShard Vlog)
A “drive time” classic from the parallel universe…
Time to trudge.
Cincinatti band, Over the Rhine have several fine snowy tunes.
Blood oranges in the snow, which I discovered this morning, is the eponymous track from their Xmas album.
And the title track from their 2008 Xmas album is another beaut: Snow Angel.
Oh why not indeed. Here’s Ice Machine. – a really early Depeche Mode song covered by Royskopp.
Brilliant new romantic era nonsense lyrics :
Running through my head secretly
I shout at the boys in the factory
A letter, once composed
Seven years long and as tall as a tree
There’s no business like snow business!
Catchy 1977 Beatles tribute, It’s snowed on Yesterday, by Marie Laforet.
As the best winter song (by Teenage Fanclub, since you ask) hasn’t been mentioned, here’s my Afterword Winter Mix from way back:
This, perhaps: although it might be associated with Christmas and horses, as much as with snow…
A cracker from Laura Marling: Goodbye England (Covered in snow).
A useful YT comment:
“At a recent concert of hers, Laura explained the meaning behind this song. She and her dad went for a walk up a hill near her hometown when she was 7 or 8, where the view was beautiful and her dad asked that one day, before he died, would she take him back up that hill, so he could remember how beautiful the world is.”
He is still alive so maybe they haven’t done that walk yet?
A fine snow song from Nick.
His “Babe, You Turn Me On”, one of his very best songs IMO, has a rather strange reference to crimson snow.
.
We stand awed inside a clearing
We do not make a sound
The crimson snow falls all about
Carpeting the ground
Everything is falling, dear
All rhyme and reason gone
It’s just history repeating itself
And, babe, you turn me on
Like an idea
Like an atom bomb
Just watch out for coloured snow
If you like blue, jazzy snow, Ahmad Jamal is your man…..
Late to the party, prog snow
Time for a little snowy globe-trotting!
Snjór -Iceland
Lumi – Finland
Eira – Wales
Sneachda – Scottish Gaelic
Nieve – Mexico
Sne – Denmark

Slinky Indonesian pop princess, Anggun, certainly manages to banish my winter melancholy!
All this snowy music made me wonder: which countries get mot most snow?
I rather enjoyed this discussion with photographs of that question:

One surprise was to read how much snow they get in Japan.
There’s a cue for a song!

Here you go!
A list of top Japanese winter songs.

Now, a slightly more traditional Japanese piece

I think Hokkaido is where most of the wintery action takes place…there was a trilogy on the telly, one programme looking at each of the three main Japanese islands and it was striking how much Hokkaido looked like a part of Scandinavia, transposed to another part of the globe…
This one, I think…

Also, the clip from Memoirs of Geisha has made me want to seek it out and see the whole movie…
Glad to hear I’ve encouraged your cinematic interest.
I’ll check that BBC doc out.
Here is ANOTHER list of wintry Japanese songs.
https://allabout-japan.com/en/article/4613/
It mentions that there is a genre called Enka which is full of sentimental ballads, many of which are snow songs.
Here is the example they give.
Here he is again on some kind of odd daytime TV show.
I’m chucking in this Japanese gem.
It has some snow and ice, a lot of melodrama and a long-legged blonde girl in a preposterous outfit. Magnificently OTT!

It’s part of the music for an on-line game called Black Desert Online.

As this is a very wintry thread, I am taking the liberty of posting this magnificent clip an Amsterdam skating encountering some very thin ice.

What a star! I take my hat off to him.
I bet he wishes he had a river he could skate away on…
Thanks Fitterstoke!
This was a lot of fun.
I’m surprised we didn’t find more folk songs about snow. I may dig around a little more…
But for the moment, here is a playlist for this thread ..
Cheers, KFD – always good to have a playlist as a summation, especially when the music is wide-ranging…
Have two snows for the price of one.
When I saw the title, I was half expecting this…
Hank Snow was from Canada so he knew all about that white stuff. Canada has some retty serious winters: 20 minus and then some.
Here we go: 25 Canadian songs about winter:

Not too many band I’d herd of there. But Julie was not an entirely new name.
..this is more of a snow scene with attitude, rather than a song about snow…
Stupendous! That is a video and a half. I recognised a lot of Stockholm locations.
It was advertising the band’s final tour and final album.
Kent were enormously popular here. A perfectly decent band but they never got me too excited
I confess I don’t know them at all…but I am familiar with the video. I initially thought it was a trailer for a movie before I realised it was a band…
