Anyone who’s had a dog or a cat knows that they can sometimes seem aware of things in an inexplicable way. Especially dogs. They often seem able to sense intentions, for example. But what about us humans and Lodestone? Do we have 6th sense in any form? Three times have particularly stuck in my mind when I’ve felt that I have.
The first was when I was about 18. I was playing darts with strangers in a pub for money and me and a friend were losing big. Our opponents came up with a challenge: if you can get a bullseye with one dart you win the money, but if you miss you have to give us double. Much to my friend’s dismay and our opponents’ delight I accepted, even though I wasn’t a regular player at all and not much cop really. But I accepted because I knew, like 100% just KNEW that my one throw was going to go in the bullseye. Not the tiniest shred of doubt in my mind. And it did. Much to everyone’s amazement.
A football playing friend of mine once told me that players always know in their heart before they kick a penalty whether it’ll go in or not. Is that true? If so perhaps my darts thing was similar to that. Perhaps it was just the confidence that led to the result. I dunno.
But another, very different example happened about 8 years ago when I was at a very posh charity dinner with about 200 other people. There was a raffle and first prize was an emerald. When the evening’s host (who, like most of the people there, was a stranger to me) stood up to pick a ticket and announce the winner, again I knew 100% it was going to be me. And, oddly, I really, really didn’t want it to be. As the only foreigner there it seemed for some reason inappropriate for me as an outsider to walk up and collect the top prize. But I absolutely knew that it would be my number announced. An absolute certainty that had me cringing with embarrassment well before the announcement was made. I still have the emerald.
Then, just the other day I was playing backgammon and losing as I always do. At one point I said despondently to my opponent, I’m going to roll a 6 and a 1, which is the worst possible outcome for me, then you’ll roll a double five and take both my counters. And guess what happened? Yes. It was like that scene in the Evil Dead where yer woman predicts the cards.
Anyone else ever felt the spooky touch of premonition, sixth sense, paranormal type malarky? Or am I some sort of God or something?
