Depressing to think that Schapps can and obviously does dine out on this – my perfect cousin.
Hopefully MIck Jones is oblivious to this and regards him as a target of derision.
I went to school with Grant’s brother, André Shapps. He was in my class. We all knew that Mick Jones was his cousin. This was pretty cool around 1977-78. Andre went on to play keyboards with Big Audio Dynamite and do a bit of DJ’ing, I think.
At school, I never knew that Andre had a younger brother. There’s at least 6 years between them, I think.
Steve, I suggest you consult this fascinating thread, where you will find not only more information about Grant Schepps and his pop family ties, but a whole host of further information covering a wide range of cultural interests:
Mark Ronson is related to both Macolm Rifkind and Leon Brittan. Chris Martin’s uncle was MP for one of the Portsmouth constituencies in the 80s. Michael ( now Lord) Jopling’s grandson is married to Ellie Goulding. Doubtless there are others. Grant’s brother, Andre, was a member of BAD during the 90s.
Christopher Guest’s grandfather, Leslie Haden-Guest, was MP for Islington North. I don’t think this matters politically, but it may have had some significance for Spinal Tap – the constituency includes Tufnell Park.
Isn’t CG now an earl or something (know he got married to Jamie Lee Curtis). His brother is Anthony Hayden Guest, a man so unpopula in polite society he earned the nickname Anthony Hated Guest
Yes, he inherited the title, Baron, which was given to his grandfather, but is one of the hereditary peers who no longer sits in the Lords – I think he volunteered to leave, realising how ridiculous it all is.
I have a patient who bought a Lordship(of the manor) for a substantive sum. He writes letters of complaint whenever anyone at work calls him Mr. His real name isn’t Juan Kerr, but may as well be.
Oh, we have one of those who heads the Village Hall, and refused to hire it to me as that dreadful pop music makes a terrible racket. He is/was at least a real Dr (retired), but of Archeology. Look, mate, this is Cambridge – almost everybody’s got a doctorate in something or other.
A few years later he came begging as nobody was prepared to hire the VH under his ludicrous terms, and I took great pleasure in replying “Dear Mr, please stick it up your arse, Yours, etc.”
The owner of Rupalis curry restaurant in Newcastle bought the title for Lord of the Manor of Harpole. He was always referred to as Lord Harpole, it was always taken jokily I don’t think he though he should have been in the HOL and never took it seriously.
In August we stayed in Harpole and I wondered where I’d heard the name before, then aha “that’s it”
Doesn’t he go by different names when it suits him?
I wondered what had happened to Limahl…
Actually, I have just realised Limahl was an anagram of the singer’s name, so probably not Grant Schapps.
There was early 90s rap singer called “Psst! Hang Crap!”.
His single “Hangin’ Crap!” was Britain’s answer to New Kids on the Block’s “Hangin’ Tough!” – if I remember correctly.
There’s no public record of Joe Strummer’s (aka John Graham Mellor) father’s voting patterns, but Mellor, Senior, was second secretary in the foreign service and would have served under an almost entirely Tory government (Atlee and Wilson being the exceptions).
Grant Shnapps wasn’t he a roadie for Kraftwerk?
Surely you mean Grant Snapps, the bassist with Slaughter and the Dogs who eventually toned down his act and found fleeting fame with the Korgis
Gran Tshnapps didn’t she play piano with Lieutenant Pigeon?
Anyhow @SteveT why is it depressing? Can you no longer enjoy the music of The Clash?

So you’re getting depressed on the hearsay going on in your head!
Not getting depressed at all old chum, it was poetic licence.
How much was it?

Cilla Black was a Tory, can’t listen to her
If there are any Cilla fans on here, they’ll soon
be inviting you to Step Outside, Dai
Paul Weller was a Tory too, for a while IIRC.
And Gary Numan

Does this change Mick Jones’s claim back in the day that, “I ain’t never lived lower than the 12th floor”?
Only in that he omitted to add that he owned the 11 floors below.

Think there was also a venue round there called St Hubbins Rock Club

Hi llama?
I was thinking Peter Hamill of VDGG
Isn’t Steve Winwood’s daughter married to a bigwig in the Tory party (Chairman ??)
There’s no public record of Joe Strummer’s (aka John Graham Mellor) father’s voting patterns, but Mellor, Senior, was second secretary in the foreign service and would have served under an almost entirely Tory government (Atlee and Wilson being the exceptions).
Something to rebel against.
Jobs he would be unlikely to get if he shared his son’s politics.
Second sec is pretty low down the FCO food chain. Equivalent of HEO, I think.
