American democracy has seen far too many moments like this.
The shooter is dead. And mercifully “President Trump” ( why do they call him that?) is unscathed.

Nobody seems to be talking about where the bullet went after it passed through his right ear. Maybe that’s the one fatality.
Apparently, it says here, the injury was caused by a shard of glass shattered by the bullet.
Not what Trump says. He wouldn’t be lying, surely.

It was the flag that was suspended between two cranes high in the sky above his head.
The shooter was killed by the secret service and another person died in the mayhem. Certainly not staged by anyone. Trump’s immediate instinct was to milk the moment for all its worth. He will continue to do so – no surprises there.
A set up? They’d risk gettting that close to his head? Murdering that 20 year old,? Someone else dead and another seriously injured ?
We’ve already had, on here, the assertion that it was a glass shard from a teleprompter and that Trump is just grandstanding saying it was a bullet, when you can clearly see the teleprompters intact after he is on the ground and if the teleprompter was hit and glass flew up you’d see it and it would have been reported on. I mean FFS.
Right. Because the possibility that this was just another socially-excluded young man radicalised by social media, with legal access to the kind of weapon needed to do something like this, is just too dull and commonplace. So it has to be a conspiracy.

I agree that it looks like Trump was mindful of the optics that presented with him shaking his fist , blood smeared as he was helped off stage. Remarkable that he had the presence of mind to do it either out of a fighting instinct or as a photo op.

However this report suggests the cops did investigate which caused the shooter to hurry his shots at Trump.
One local police officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who pointed his rifle at the officer. The problem with arguing that harsh rhetoric directly and inevitably leads to literal violence is that when someone takes a shot at the political opponent you’ve spent months arguing will destroy your democracy/the country/the planet, you’ve not really left yourself anywhere to go.
Ditto: wishing death or incarceration upon your opponent, fomenting conspiracy theories around them and so on. These things are either wrong for both sides or for neither. It took less than two minutes from bullet hitting ear to the first text I received from a Democrat pal deploying the term “false flag”, and the subsequent 36 hours have been a welter of conspiracy theorising. If you can figure this stuff out within minutes/hours of the event you should either be heading up the CIA or putting down the Tom Clancy.
Perhaps the single worst thing about Donald Trump is that he’s managed to recast US politics in his own image. No one wants to admit it, because everyone feels that the virtue of their own position/the inherent evil of their opponent should permit them special dispensation, but it’s what’s happened. Just look around.
I don’t know if Trump can be said to have won the election – the last 10 days speak to how fast things can change in politics – but I really, really don’t see how Biden can win from here. We have one candidate who stayed onstage during a shooting to fire up his supporters and another who looks like he probably falls asleep during his afternoon Columbo. Which means we’re probably going to find out whether all the dire warnings have substance or not. And it’ll be pretty disconcerting either way.
With a combination of crushing lack of self awareness, combined with top-drawer Premiership-level chutzpah, Trump will call for national unity and togetherness in his upcoming rally speech tonight. This oughtta be good.
In other news, Aileen Cannon has flushed the documents case against him right down his gold toilet. What a time to be alive!
Imagine the scenes in the USA, if you will, if it had been a black man or a muslim or a hispanic illegal immigrant that took a potshot at The Donald, instead of a white, registered Republican right-wing gun nut. Then we’d see some unrest.
I’d be perfectly happy to hear of the demise of Donald Trump, but not by assassination. Oh no.

A couple of years back, JD Vance wrote a very well received book called Hillbilly Elegy in which he wrote some very unflattering things about Trump. His rise through the ranks has been meteoric as he’s still in his first term as a senator
