I still tune into Later but for last few series I’ve generally been fast forwarding more than watching. The latest one though is really good. Jazz themed and thankfully that doesn’t mean Gregory Porter (apologies to any fans out there).
Proper young guns of the UK jazz scene doing their stuff, impressive young new artist Joy Crookes , and some dude called Kano doing interesting things with rap backed by strings and choir. Even co host Jamie Cullum was good and boy can he play the piano (the obligatory duet with Jools). Not a hoary old rocker in sight – worth tuning in.

Glad I am not only one who doesn’t like Gregory Porter. Absolute bilge.
The contract to produce Later was put out to Competitive Tender, but retained by the BBC.
It’s now back in London rather than Kent & they’ve gone for a much lighter & open set – it looks like they’re performing in a foyer & you can see the audience.
They’d said that they were bringing in some new ideas, which seems to extend to more than just the SCS sofa, as the acts seem a lot fresher & newer (Still time for Paul Weller & Richard Thompson though!)
I’m not sure about the cohost idea. Is Jools worried he might be replaced by a younger, radio 2 DJ &piano player?
Here’s the press release:

Looks like the budget is very much lower than for previous series.
Enjoyed Nerija and Jamie Cullum. Kano was OK and so was Joy Crookes but neither are likely to inspire purchases. Metronomy were uninteresting. Made myself a sandwich and a hot drink, caught up on unread emails during their spots.
Glad I am not only one who doesn’t like Gregory Porter. Absolute bulge.
Mercifully no sign of Plastic Bertrand. Absolute Belge.
I really hate light-brown carpets. Absolute beige.
Luckily there were no military brass bands on. Absolute Bugle
I’m calling it: Mary J Blige is headlining this year’s (newly named) Hootenany!
And whither the Band Played Waltzing Matilda Hitmaker? Absolute Bogle.
Wither the 6 foot bear in Rainbow – Absolute Bungle
Whither the revolting 80s fruit drink – Absol-Um Bongo.
Took a liking to Lucrezia, but she was absolute Borgia.
There’s no need to have Jools Holland on the piano. You could have Victor. Absolut Borge.
Wither those bread rolls with the hole in the middle? Absolute Bagel.
The other week they had Michael Kiwanuka Little Simz and Slowthai who were all excellent The new format is shiz though
Jamie is bloody brilliant. Madame Foxy has watched him perform miracles on a barely in tune piano at his old school for a retirement do (she taught there) and his ex music teacher positively glows when you mention his name. He’s a genuine talent, make no mistake.
Surely it’s not just me who likes Gregory Porter? I agree that he’s hardly cutting edge, and almost a nostalgia act, but he does it well. I have to be in the right mood though.
Saw him a few years back in Southend and he was really good. Silly hat though!
I think there was a backlash from when he projected a giant image of his naked arse against the side of the Houses Of Parliament..
His naked arse
Will tell on you
@sewer-robot
Arf!
The hat and chin strap are to disguise facial scarring he acquired when he was seven or eight. He hasn’t revealed what happened.
Ah had forgotten that you liked the balaclaved one @bobhumphrey01. I was probably being a bit churlish in my comment but he doesn’t do it for me although there’s no doubting the quality of his voice.
Mr Feedback, very gracious of you to admit that you’re in the wrong! That was what you were saying wasn’t it?
@Tiggerlion – I didn’t know about the facial scarring, in which case my silly hat comment is definitely unfair.
