Oh dear, not another one of my fave mags to bite the dust?!? Been with Shindig! pretty much from the start, it’s been a bit up and down at times but since they went back to a more regular publishing timetable it’s been really spot on. Good luck to the editing staff and hope the ‘new’ title is not much more than a re-branding.
Slightly baffling rebrand. I first picked up a Shindig in Borders because (apart from the fact it was in with the other music magazines!) it was clearly, from the title and picture, a music magazine and I expected it to be about older music.
Kaleidoscope was the name of that little magazine that used to fall out of Sunday papers containing lots of things that you never knew you needed (because in general you didn’t).
Since Borders closed, the only place I’ve seen Shindig on the shelves is on US holidays but I still buy the occasional copy from Zinio.
The editors have made a statement -As I said in a reply to the below post and an earlier cryptic message, there is bad shit going on in Shindigland. Our old publisher is rebranding without Andy or I (who I think everyone knows ARE Shindig!) This new Kaleidoscope title is not Shindig!, although the first issue contains elements of what would and should have been Shindig! #47. It’s a sham and something I know our readers will not be happy about. The editorial policy is not ours. We as editors are not responsible and are as shocked by this as you. A full statement will follow. In the meantime we are working on means and ways to continue Shindig! in the format we all cherish. Our site is no longer functional so please watch this space. More soon.
I’m as mad as my avatar looks about this – definitely calls for a boycott, sadly.
It’s A4, 100 pages-ish. Lots of reading, in depth interviews and plenty of reviews. Usually readily available in high st WH Smiths, or was should I say.
The album reviews are particularly good as they tend to give you info you might only otherwise get in Record Collector but with a lot more panache. As with many niche mags, there are often themed editions which tend to take over and if you’re not interested in that particular theme, you’re a bit stuffed for that issue so pick your back issues carefully. I was going to suggest nipping over to Zinio to grab a few but sadly it seems to have gone already.

I think they shoulda rebranded as Klacto Vee Sedstein, just ’cause.
Well, let’s be honest the title, ‘Shindig’ always summoned up a ‘1963 motif’, whereas ‘Kaleidoscope’ evokes a far more up to date ‘1967 vibe’.
They’re just trying to keep up with the times. Man.

Looks like a good mag – I’ve never even seen a copy. What’s the format? Standard size etc? the back issues are expensive at 9.99.
