Set fuzztones to max. What a legend.
He had written a note on his FB page for this very eventuality
“Hi to all, and many thanks to all of you who have been reading my rock stories for all this time, it has been greatly appreciated!
Please note, that if you’re reading this now, this is my final vignette, as I am no longer residing on this plane of existence, and have “moved on”, to wherever that may be.
I’d like to think there is something beyond where I was to where I am now, assuming that the millions of suppositions as to what is next, are accurate.
I’d like to think that I’m thoroughly enjoying my new “residence”, and that the countless rumors that there is a big working “studio in the sky” are true, and that we are, dare I say, making heavenly music!
I am also hoping that I am currently engaged in renewing relationships with a ton of friends and acquaintances, many of which go back for decades.
I’ve had a good run, and I am delighted it lasted as long as it did. I’m also delighted that I am told I have a legacy that will last even longer.
I look forward to meeting some of you in the future who are reading this, but LOL, don’t hurry to get here, I’m not going anywhere!”
Probably the greatest song ever to come out of Australia

Great song, great group. They appeared (in the UK), had a huge hit, and disappeared again (in the UK).
I remember this. I suspect substances had been sampled…
It is indeed very good. But there are more than a few songs that will give it a run for its money.
Triffids, Church, Go-Betweens, INXS, Bamboos,
But that is a churlish comment ona thread about a very remarkable chap.
I loved his farewell letter.
Thanks for bringing him to my attention, Slotbadger.
So many great records and wonderful memories.
Thanks, Mr T
Other than a few albums by The Who, I’m not sure I have much of his work, but he certainly knew his stuff. And his final message is somehow both lovely and sad.
RIP.
His Wikipedia page is worth a read – the list of people he worked with is amazing. Including, er, The Bachelors.
Apparently ST always underplayed the records he made with Con, Dec and John feeling the sound was a bit soupy
So was the music.
You must have a tin ear, Dec in particular was a real broth of a boy
And this too – a young Davie Jones who Shel was convinced would go far. With Who-lite guitar freakout at the end
Niall B’s always interesting Studios of London blog featured him in depth in the episode about the Studio where Tommy was recorded. From memory it said that as a result of the court case against the Who after their manager fired him as producer Shel received a larger percentage from Tommy than any member of the Who, and that deal would last for his lifetime. Managers, who’d have ’em?
Gosh! When The Easybeats appeared on Australian TV, Bandstand pulled all the stops out.
This is wonderful stuff! Those go go sheilas are really giving it some welly,
This Guardian article was excellent reading for a dunce like me who knew nothing about him.

Here’s an interview.
The YT page that the Talmy interview comes from is Produce like a Pro.
