And, oddly enough, while we were watching it just now Mrs thep suddenly said, you should go out and buy a mandolin. Might just do that.

There’s a new track from Johnny Marr that came out a few days ago which I am really loving.. To me, it’s the most “Smiths like” thing he’s done in a long time…..

I’m also enjoying an album by Maggie Rose “Half Moon”. She’s not an artist I’d come across before but apparently this is her 5th album. This one has Daniel Tashian (who older viewers may remember from The Silver Seas) on production / writing duties and (to me anyway) it does have that Silver Seas vibe on some tracks.

Here’s a song written by Vini Reilly, and performed by his next door neighbour. It’s on the Durutti Column’s new album. I swear it’s the most perfect song I’ve ever heard, and this is a film of the actual take, you can see Vini moved almost to tears.
Damn, I wish I could hear that. I’ve lots of love for Vini’s music. I was pleasantly surprised to read that Harry Styles cited him as a big influence on his last album (which I’ve also not heard.)
Yep, and also the reliably weird Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange, formerly Lightspeed Champion) cites Vini as an influence and uses a sample of his guitar on the recent Essex Honey album, which I heartily recommend to fans of Lewis Taylor.
The new Durutti Column album is a definite for the end of year list.

I keep going back to the version of Lost Boys she did on the Jimmy Fallon show, playing alongside enthusiastic kids. It always cheers me – and I hate kids..

I got the album yesterday and put it on the ipod. This came up on shuffle while I was out weeding earlier and I had to stop and listen. A fine song.

I’m rather liking the opening track from Son Volt’s new album. Reminds me of some of their earlier stuff.
Saw these at Cropredy this month, they started with this which I thought was a gutsy start, Marshall Gilmour Webbs with The Roches “Hammond Song.”
I’ve posted this before – Alice Night, with a heartfelt tribute to a friend who died. Seen her a few times – she’s local – and she’s an electrifying performer, although she probably didn’t need to take all her clothes off last time I saw her.

This song, especially when paired with its video, has been my summer tune and I find it ridiculously uplifting.
It’s been quite a summer for Kevin Morby, too, as he and Katie “Waxahatchee” Crutchfield have just become parents for the first time.

ULD are a low-key Norwegian female trio, voice, piano and accordion, who play beautifully arranged, understated songs. I saw them live at Roskilde this summer and they spellbound a very large crowd.
I suspect there were a few Norwegians in the audience. This was during the World Cup. When the girls did a brief tribute to the RO RO RO song the whole tent went bonkers.
