So do you not have a regular starter word then? If you do, you could’ve gone ahead and used it. Even if you’d put the correct answer in next there would’ve been a bit less unfairness involved.

Agreed it’s a superb record. I understand why you rate it so highly. But the best one for me is the not-Afterword-friendly Three Lions.

Throwing myself on the mercy of the competition committee. I’ll attempt to link to a screenshot of yesterdays result but it’s not like any penalty strokes will ruin my round
Not so far but with Radio 4 anything is possible, anything. It’s dangerous out here on the edge of society where Chance rules and nothing, really nothing, makes sense. No wonder I occasionally make the odd mistake. It’s hard being logical when you’re terrified.
Halfway scores tomorrow. I propose to add 1 point to Chiz’s score (as suggested by him) in recognition of his, er, unusual gambit. Since there were three other eagles that day it seems unlikely that Chiz would have done worse. Hope that’s not too controversial.
I accept the penalty, and want to say I’m truly a better person as a result of this unfortunate incident. I’d like to thank everyone who stood beside me during these dark days, including hey no hang on there wasn’t anyone was there
I’m back.
Completely unaware of any Chiz based shenanigans.
I’m rowing the Atlantic in December for a local Cornish charity and I’ve been on a training run for a few days from Falmouth to Scilly and back.
The last signal my mobile had was off Wolf Rock lighthouse and that was Thursday 1am.
I’ll jump back in once I stop swaying. https://invictusatlantic.com/
My god, it’s like having RayX back – “Sorry I can’t confirm my fourth hole-in-one in a row, I was too busy crossing The Atlantic in my tiny boat with only these enormous and stupendously -defined biceps”.. Yeah, right.
Blimey, welcome back! Look forward to a splurge of results once you get your land legs back.
I suppose we can rule you out for the December match then? You should post details of how and where to sponsor you – I can’t remember the last time a Massive member (…) rowed the Atlantic.
If only. Using STARE just gives you a small statistical improvement on most other words but the rest is still a puzzle.
Eagles baffle me though. According to my stats I get 1.2% of eagles. 3’a and 4’s are pretty equal and about half as much for 5’s. Never had a hole in one and get about the same number of 6’s as eagles.
Aren’t eagles almost entirely luck? Obviously starting with a good choice is advantageous but anybody getting a string of eagles should be running off to the lottery (or else is known as RayX).
I’m honestly not criticising the use of advantageous starters, each to his own. I like finding myself wandering down a dark alley but sometimes, like today, it can be bloody frustrating!
If you manually change the date on your phone settings, you can play the missed day. Just change it back to auto after or you join the cast of Groundhog Day.
Must be hell keeping these scores going, especially yours – “Oh,look, another eagle, no idea how that happened. I must be truly blest”. As pure as driven snow, as unblemished as a nun’s bottom – that’s you.
Help me out here, folks. Black Celeb has awarded himself 7 for missing 1180. Lodes suggests plumb1909 should get 4 for missing the same round. This seems unfair – either they should both get 4 or both get 7. What does everybody think?
Whatever we decide we should perhaps do the same with Jim – would be amusing if he ended up winning…
It’s got to be worse than par, I’m afraid. The 7 is what we agreed for those who slip off the edge of the board, as it were, by failing to guess within 6. This is different, I know, but we wouldn’t want anyone to have an incentive not to declare their true result by ‘missing a hole’ (yeah right) because they were out of signal (yeah, right).
Methinks, the type of player who deliberately misses a day to gain a par is not the type of player we have on this here blog.
Simple forgetfulness, pressure of work, catching a plane, a hangover sent by Satan are all understandable and forgiveable lapses.
Hence my plea for first-offence four. Subsequent misdemeanours deserve the full heavy hand of the law ie 7
“Simple forgetfulness, pressure of work, catching a plane, a hangover sent by Satan are all understandable and forgiveable lapses.”
Those were literally all the reasons why I missed #1180. A work trip to the other end of NZ…a long and busy day that led to a very entertaining rugby game in the evening. I enjoyed generous hospitality in the form of beer and wine before, during, and for several hours after the event. Back in my hotel room, I fell asleep fully clothed while watching the presidential debate. Woke up with a pneumatic drill pummelling my noggin and I’m still not 100% after two days.
We once had a bar football ladder at a place where I worked. Everyone on the ladder had a nickname inserted between their first name and surname. As early success gave way to nervous defeats, my name went from “the power” to “the choker”.
@henpetsgi As of the 15th hole you and Black C are way out in front in the quest for the wooden spoon. You are on 67 (+7), he is on 68 (+8). His 6 on the 16th gives you a problem though – you’ll just have to hope that he has a sudden run of birdies on the last two holes.
NB: any 7s will attract sideways glances at the very least, and may well result in a stewards’ inquiry.
I’m with you on that. I only got it becasue I run out of real words with the letters I already had. And that took a while becasue I didn’t think it was a word. Bastards.

Here’s a clue –

I work in mysterious ways my wonders to perform …
Given that, When you say “stuffed up an easy par putt”, it’s more a case of hitting it away from the hole.
That’s one way of looking at it. Some pedants might say the correct way of looking at it.
The Lodestone motto, as far as Wordling is concerned, appears to be, “Video Meliora Proboque, Deteriora Sequor”

We are familiar with your ‘start with whatever word comes into my head/heard on the radio’ strategy. How often do you start with SPOON?
Not so far but with Radio 4 anything is possible, anything. It’s dangerous out here on the edge of society where Chance rules and nothing, really nothing, makes sense. No wonder I occasionally make the odd mistake. It’s hard being logical when you’re terrified.
Lucky, coz there were three options for the first letter. As Lodes and Catboy discovered…

Halfway scores tomorrow. I propose to add 1 point to Chiz’s score (as suggested by him) in recognition of his, er, unusual gambit. Since there were three other eagles that day it seems unlikely that Chiz would have done worse. Hope that’s not too controversial.
We should all be admiring Chiz’ fortitude as he keeps on playing despite all that tar and all those feathers….

Excuses, excuses.
You’re wasting your time, Mike. Moosey’s not coming back.

You should, maybe, try it just to sure you are having fun.
Birdie, birdie, par, eagle, birdie: two minutes later all done, quick fag, fall asleep.
Nah..
Couple of months ago I tried using SLATE for a change. That was the month I got the spoon. Altogether unsatisfactory experience.

5
Howsabout it’s a 4 for the first missed day, then a 7 after that?
I’m persuaded. 4 for a first offence, 7 thereafter.
How about ‘sailing round Fastnet’?

@henpetsgi As of the 15th hole you and Black C are way out in front in the quest for the wooden spoon. You are on 67 (+7), he is on 68 (+8). His 6 on the 16th gives you a problem though – you’ll just have to hope that he has a sudden run of birdies on the last two holes.
NB: any 7s will attract sideways glances at the very least, and may well result in a stewards’ inquiry.
