I can only imagine what that would be worth now. I’ve read interviews with Macca which say that the Bill Black bass is kept in his Soho Square office in London.
Here’s the bass in action with Elvis, Scotty and Bill in the Sun Studios. That’s presumably Sam Philips at the front.
Sad. That means that out of Presley’s first quartet, only D. J. Fontana suvives (aged 85), Bill Black having died back in 1965, followed of course by the King himself in 1977.
For some reason this gives me a bit of dust in the eye.
His playing has given me so much pleasure that I feel I almost owe him a personal debt that I can never repay.
A thrilling player & by all available accounts a top notch human to boot.
Nuff said.
What a player. I had the great fortune to see him in London in 2004, and it was a thrill to hear Scotty run over those wonderful Sun licks in person. Another artist to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for bringing sparkles of delight into my life.

I had no idea he was still with us.
Here’s Scotty with Elvis on I’m Right , You’re Left, She’s Gone recorded in March 1955.
Keith Richards has said this is his favourite guitar solo.
Why have I heard of Scotty but none of the others ?
Bassist Bill Black had quite a career under his own name with the Bill Black Combo. Most of it consisted of MOR instruments though.
The upright bass that Bill used on all those Elvis recordings is now owned by Paul. It was a birthday gift from Linda.

In my opinion, Scotty invented Rock guitar. Boy! Elvis could sing but so much of the excitement in those records is generated by Scotty.
Scotty only recorded two LPs under his own name. From 1964 this is the first
