One of those actors who are a quality mark for anything he was in. I recently watched the TV series of Lonesome Dove and sure enough, he and it were excellent. Brilliant in The Godfather of course. RIP, great legacy.
As if Lonesome Dove wasn’t enough, he was also in Open Range, another great Western story.
As you say, if he was in something it was probably going to be pretty good. Even when he wasn’t top of the bill, he usually brought gravitas and warmth to his characters, and they always stood out.
Sad news. An authentic Hollywood great, the likes of which they really don’t make any more.
His 70s run of movies is obviously preposterous, but he was in good stuff right through his life, and never seemed to phone it in.
I’m particularly fond of the roles where they paired him with a younger hothead; Sean Penn in Colors, Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder and RDJ in the underrated The Judge.
Suggest a search for “A Shot at Glory”, starring Robert Duvall, and Ally McCoist. Perhaps not one of his best, but all the footballers report a great time being being had. They were probably well refreshed during filming.
RIP Boo Radley

For the curious…
@Captain-Darling Spot on. Open Range is a wonderful western which I’ll be watching in his honour, tonight.
Haven’t seen it but I intend to rectify this omission.
“Why do you hurt me, Michael? I’ve always been loyal to you.”
“ Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news at once.”
One of my favourite lines – the calm delivery after Woltz has totally lost his shit.
