Obituary
Probably a surprise he got to the age that he did given the drug use.COPD cause of death.
One of the formative experiences of my musical life was as at age 13 going to the cinema in a seaside holiday crowd and seeing Woodstock. Sly that white tasselled jacket , those purple framed glasses had the crowd on a string. The dynamics of the performance totally exhilarating.

I have to confess I’d never have recognised Sly from that photo.
He looks like a Rastafarian elder living his best life in the Blue Hills.
It often seems to be the case that heavy drug abusers either die young or else they live to ripe old ages. A matter of constitution.
A hugely influential artist. One of those primarily responsible for the morphing of ’60s soul into ’70s funk. Miles Davis and other jazzers took note and switched onto funkier ’70s stylings.
Brilliant artist who could make the most joyful music ever, and the most gut-wrenching angstful music too, both equally great.
And one of very few men who could make a crocheted multi-coloured frilly hat look kinda sexy!
A true legend.
I only yesterday ordered the new comp from the doc ‘Sly Lives’ how ironic. What would Woodstock have been without Sly and his merry gang? A performance of many lifetimes.
R.I.P. Sly
A genuine innovator and icon. Music would not be the same without him. I hope the demons are all gone.
It’s a rare week that Riot doesn’t get a spin here. Probably my favourite album.
