In the late 70s & early 80s I followed The Beat around the Midlands (I lived there at the time). It was always a joyful moment whenever Saxa stepped up to the mike.
Sad to hear about Sama, he seemed old all those years ago. I saw the a good few times, the last time was at a Beat/Madness/UB40 triple bill at Birmingham Bingley Hall (my hometown)
Dave Wakeling is quite an underrated songwriter IMO , this being my favourite of his songs, even covered by Pete Townsend : Just a little side note as to the measure of what a top guy he is, I was trying to play this last year and I couldn’t work out the guitar tuning Dave used. Posted on his Facebook and in less than a day he’d come back and gave me it.

Crap! Played Just Can’t Stop It only last weekend… a mighty record, mighty band, mighty Saxa.
87, not a bad age all in all. Can you remember how comical a figure he seemed, so old, so ancient, on TOTP. About 51 in the heyday of the band……….
Such an amazing distinctive sound. You don’t need to see this to know it’s him.

Great story about Saxa when The Beat supported Bowie at about 1:52
The full interview is well worth a listen as well.
