After World Series Cricket decimated the Australian Test Squad.
He was the Aussie skipper when my brother and I played the Ashes in the back-garden, when we were kids.
Did the Aussies ever win?
Should have added that his first Test century was in fact a triple – 311.
There was a brief period when as a member of Aberdeenshire Colts I modelled myself on Bob Simpson. I once scored 37 and, copying his leg breaks, took 2 for 88. Funnily enough I never made the breakthrough to the first X1
I remember when he and Allan Border started to have some success with the Aussie test team after they’d become next to useless after Kim Hughes resigned as captain in tears and AB, not the most dynamic of people, was given the captaincy. The 1989 Ashes series in England, when AB was captain and Simpson coach, was remarkable. I remember listening to it on the car radio on the way to a gig – it was just starting, I think Marsh and Taylor were opening? After the gig I turned on the radio again to catch up expecting Australia to be all out and blow me down those two were still in!
