Jake Black aka The Very Reverend D. Wayne Love of Alabama 3 died yesterday, best known for “Woke Up This Morning” – the song played over the opening titles of the Sopranos.
I first saw Alabama 3 in 1998 supporting Primal Scream and subsequently bought their debut album “Exile on Coldharbour Lane”. I loved that album, still do, it’s their bestselling recording to date (a fact which I know pisses the band off after a dozen or so releases) and as the 20 year anniversary of its release approaches they are/were due to tour this autumn playing it in its entirety.
Recoding wise the novelty soon wears off with the country/acid house/gospel schtick, but a live Alabama 3 show was always entertaining, a festival set especially so, one can only wonder what will happen without D. Wayne.

Sadly, he don’t dance to techno any more*
I really liked EOCL as well; the rest were OK, but EOCL really cut new ground for me. Still gets spun in the car when Sharon isn’t there to roll her eyes at me. (See also Gangstagrass)
I saw A3 many times over the years, always a great night out. Inasmuch as you can enjoy this kind of thing, the announcement on their FB was pure gold
Yes I thought it was an excellent statement from the band. I’ve recently been playing this concert a few times it’s a great gig. I like this track a lot from that show. A sad day indeed and I wish the band well and sincerely hope they carry on.
I feel churlish, finding him an annoying intrusion within the otherwise excellence of their live shows. Still a sadness to see another young man down .
They are pals of pals of mine but I never got to see them live.
They’re playing at a little festival in Falkirk, this coming weekend, unless of course, they’ve cancelled it.
