A difficult fella as you say, but also an excellent musician and composer who never received the public recognition he deserved. I think Traffic lost a lot of their spark and creativity when he left. Their second album had several killer tracks written solely by Mason: the classic “Feelin’ Alright”, “Don’t Be Sad”, “Crying To Be Heard” and this one.
Seems he cooked an ” amazing Sunday lunch”, had a nap in his favourite chair with his dog at his feet and never woke up. I’ll go that way, please .
Will play Alone Together later – RIP, Dave.
RIP Dave, one of those Zelig figures and one of the few to play guitar on a Jimi Hendrix track – the driving 12 string on “All along the watchtower” is his.
Maintaining the tradition of all obituary posts being duplicated I note.
I did check no one else had posted. I didn’t expect my post to be duplicated , though regular followers would not be surprised. Hopefully the Mods will rectify.
Sandwiched between Hugh Masekela and Massive Attack, my copy of Scrapbook – a double LP compilation of his works from 1972 no less; he had already been prolifically brilliant by then – will be making its way to the turntable this afternoon. Thanks for all the great music Dave, say hello to Cass for us. Condolences to all of his family, his dog and his friends.
Bit weird this morning….I decided to play the aforementioned album ‘Traffic’, which is one of my all time faves, and then went online and learned of his passing. Funny how the universe works sometimes.
one of my faves too, love this song

His album from last year “A Shade Of Blues”, in which he does a few old Traffic numbers along with some blues standards, is well worth a listen.
Here’s “Low Spark”
That’s rather fine as revisions go. Decent guitar, too.
This
I bought the 7″ in a picture sleeve for 20p last week, in a RSD bargain crate.
Not a bad piece.

Love that album – and Dave has the most ineffably stoned expression on the front cover!
There was a great late period DM saying on a Word cd I think – anyone remember what it was?
