Musings on the byways of popular culture
It seems Rick Astley is playing some gigs composed entirely of Smiths’ songs…

According to bbc radio news, they are planning some gigs.
I’m more likely to go to that than I am a Morrissey gig.
Wouldn’t have seen that coming 3 and a bit decades ago.
Agreed..plus Rick Astley seems like a nice bloke
When Morrissey cancelled a gig in Berlin at the last minute, the venue hired Mexrissey (the covers band who play Smith songs in Mexican style) who happened to be on tour in Germany. Although a money-back offer was announced, no-one complained and a mighty good time was had by all.
What an ingenious solution, Fatima. Mexrissey seem like enormous fun.
The songs sound excellent in Spanish.
Panic on the streets of Newton-le-Willows.
I live in Newton-le-Willows, which adds to the strange pride in Rick doing anything. A small town that’s produced a guy who hit number one in the States (copyright Paul Gambaccini); we’ve also (yes, I’m claiming credit) had an Oscar-winning scriptwriter in Colin Welland (Chariots of Fire).
My contribution is to have been barred by three pubs.

@kaisfatdad
Surely ‘Panic in the Strrets of Cancun’
Er, I may be wrong, but I’m not entirely sure that Rick is from down Mexico way.
The Mozmeister appears to be playing a cabaret residency currently…
Looks rather fun:
That has made my day!
About 10 years ago I saw Rick in a small sweaty pub back room in Kingston with his 3 piece rock covers band The Luddites. Rick on the drums knocking out stuff like “Rockin In The Free World” and “Sex On Fire”. It was a brilliant night out. He’ll take this on with plenty of self deprecation while ensuring everyone gets their money’s worth. I think it’s a wonderful idea from a top bloke.
I saw him at a Butlins adult weekend. Great fun was had by all.
*punter* “do Never Gonna Give You Up!”
*Astley” “I’ve had one fuckin hit, do you really think I’m not gonna play it?!”
Rick and Moz have never been seen in the same room as each other, right?
Wrong!
I thought they were the same person. After all, their voices are virtually identical.
All this talk and it’s dawned on me thst “Never Gonna Give You Up” has all the hallmarks of a Smiths song. Just imagine Morrissey singing it. It works…
Reminds me of a joke –
Rick Astley’s wife – my birthday is coming up, so I’d like you to get me a DVD of that Pixar film where the old man attaches balloons to his house.
Rick Ashley – No.
But, as they point out on the internet, by not giving you “Up” he lets you down. This is “The Astley Paradox.”
The Astley Paradox – the novel Robert Ludlum kept quiet about.
Yes, my son told me that was a thing. It’s all coming back to me.
It makes me think of the “Mandela Effect” where large groups of people misremember events. Apparently there is a widespread belief that Mandela died in prison. This perplexes me because he didn’t.
I’m thinking a better example of this is people talking about Captain Pugwash featuring characters called Seaman Staines and Master Bates. It didn’t – but believing it did is so entertaining that it has become a widespread accepted truth.
Further to that, if there’s a group of people laughing about it – and you’re the one who bursts the bubble – they all instantly hate you. So you have to chuckle along and allow for it.
Some people believe Gerry Rafferty is dead.
Bob Holness playing sax on Baker Street is another one. It was actually Robert Robertson.
Would that it were, would that it were…
Also from the internet: Rick Astley must find Lent very difficult.
That song is addressed to chocolate? This changes everything!
I’d rather hear Rick Astley doing the Smiths than Morrissey. What are the odds that Johnny Marr and/or other ex Smiths show up? I’d suggest pretty high…
Marr apparently less than happy about it, as he met Blossoms recently and they didn’t tell him. Seems a bit off.
I like Blossoms a lot, shame there is a communication issue with this. They headlined Manchester Arena tonight, this is presumably just a bit of fun for them after their main tour ends.
