Well, ok – if my eyes don’t deceive me, it’s been nearly two years since we last did the randomiser dance (although it has appeared in Another Place, unless my memory is false and foamy). My memory may well be a bit foamy, since I opened a new bottle of Oban 14 year old. But I digress…
So you know the drill – set to random and list the first five off the top of the deck with NO filtering – I’ll put my fabulous five non-chill filtered toons in the comments.
No cheating, mind…
fitterstoke says
1. Michael Chapman – The Mallard
2. Annie Ross – Twisted
3. Hawkwind – Urban Guerrilla
4. Once bitten, Twice shy – Ian Hunter
5. Diane Birch – Fools
You know, I don’t think the ghost in the algorithm knows me at all – not one single prog toon…
noisecandy says
Mick Ronson’s guitar solo in Once Bitten Twice Shy is superb. A great song.
fitterstoke says
True – one of his best…
SteveT says
Never heard the original of Twisted yet I know every word of the Joni cover.
mikethep says
1. Darktown Strutters Ball – Eddie Condon
2. Blue Mist – Sam The Man Taylor
3. Honeysuckle Rose – Thelonious Monk
4. J.O.S. – Jimmy Smith
5. Just the Other Side of Nowhere – Kris Kristofferson
Jazzy.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Listening to shuffle as we speak – here’s the last five to play:
1. Shadows – Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart
2. Cindy’s Lament – Rod Stewart
3. Red, Gold and Green – Burning Spear
4. Martha – Tim Buckley
5. (er …) Duke Announces Nance and Precope (all fifteen seconds of it) – Duke Ellington
fitterstoke says
I do like a good announcement; or some pre-song banter put on a separate track…
H.P. Saucecraft says
It can be hilarious. I had John McLaughlin introducing a Monkees track the other day.
fitterstoke says
That’s a hoot ‘n’ a half!
SteveT says
Hilarious is Jackie Leven – Sting’s dead.
bang em in bingham says
Every Mothers Son- Traffic,
The Sun In September-Matthew Halsall
Man In The Street-Don Drummond
Cryin In The Chapel-Elvis Presley
UFO-Jim Sullivan
fitterstoke says
Is that Jim Sullivan or ‘Big’ Jim Sullivan? Asking for a friend…
Chrisf says
Eric Clapton & Friends – Since you Said Goodbye (from “The Breeze – JJ Cale Appreciation)
Jimi Hendrix – Who Knows (Live at the Fillmore East, NY – 12/31/69 – 2nd Set)
Pete Townshend – Its a Boy (Demo)
Van Morrison/Sinead O Conner/Chieftans – Have I told You Lately (Live On Letterman)
Frank Zappa – “We’re Not Gonna Stand For It!” (Live At The Palladium – 10/31/81 – Show 1)
fitterstoke says
60% live – is there a high proportion of live albums on your listening device at the moment?
Chrisf says
Not especially – that was from ITunes on my MacMini, which controls my complete digitised library – so there are a lot of tracks generally.
If I re-run the randomised I get….
Randy Newman – I’m Dreaming
Joni Mitchell – Day After Day
Prince – Yes
Cars – Touch and Go
Burt Bacharach – Make It Easy On Yourself
Not a single live track this time 😉
fitterstoke says
Fair enough – I thought you might have used a phone or another portable player with a limited selection…
Mike_H says
I used to do Random Play almost exclusively.
These days I prefer to play entire albums from my list of Never-Previously-Played..
(Almost) Every one’s a winner in other people’s lists so far. We’re so sofistikated, ain’t we.
Bringing the tone down, here’s mine..
1. “Music Man” from “Me About You” by Jackie De Shannon
2. “That’s All I Want From You” from “Spirit In The Dark” by Aretha Franklin
3. “The Message” from “E.S.T. Live, Pizza Express London 2002-03-09” by Esbjörn Svensson Trio
4. “Clap And Vomit” from “20 Years Of Zappa Vol. 4” by Frank Zappa
5. “Ronnie Sings?” from “The Lost Episodes” by Frank Zappa
Strange to see two FZ tracks turn up together, as I rarely play him lately.
And only one jazz track? WTF? Did Dexter Gordon die in vain?
ip33 says
I was a random man too, but sorting out what is jokingly now called the Music Room I tend to play whole albums.
And buying my first new hifi speakers since 1983 helped
fitterstoke says
New CD player?
ip33 says
Circa 1989. Sounds okay to my elderly ears. Potential update next year (if allowed!)
fitterstoke says
(Poor attempt at humour – see Neu! box set…)
ip33 says
I see!!!! I’m on holiday, so in a relaxed state!
fentonsteve says
Q Acoustics. *Rubs thighs*
ip33 says
M20s. A sonic marvel.
H.P. Saucecraft says
I wish I could unsee Fentonsteve rubbing his thighs. Any ideas?
fitterstoke says
Lye?
ip33 says
Climb That Tree – She Trinity
Burn My Eye – Radio Birdman
Loving Two – Peter Courtney
Move Your Body – Bramsam
Do Or Die – The League Unlimited Orchestra
MC Escher says
Basement Jaxx – U Don’t Know Me
Jean Knight – Mr. Big Stuff
Madvillain – Bistro
Traffic – Rainmaker
Beyonce – Forward
I have never knowingly listened to Traffic, but I was at the eel market one day, and they are one of those heritage rock acts everyone says you should listen to….
fitterstoke says
Interesting – the Traffic toon is the only one I know…
Mike_H says
I know that one and the Jean Knight..
NigelT says
Traffic are one of my favourite bands…suggest you try John Barleycorn Must Die first, but all are worth investigating. I prefer the early albums, but the comeback album Far From Home is really good too.
retropath2 says
I’ll let you know when my laptop is back from the menders and I have rebuilt I tunes from a mix of back-up HD, bandcamp and Amazon purchase files, apple music( if their cloud promise is good) and, all else failing, the groaning shelves all around me. It may be a while.(Thank goodness I prefer hard copy, with even all downloads being ripped to CD-R on arrival.)
I hate feckin’ IT.
fitterstoke says
I feel your pain…
…not literally, of course…
Mike_H says
I keep 3 backup copies of my digitised music, though I’m a bit random (and lax) as to when I do my backing-up as it takes ages. Last backup was middle of last week.
MC Escher says
Your hatred of IT and your use of itunes are perhaps not unrelated 😉
retropath2 says
I have dabbled with others, but have always preferred it, from the point of view of adding by rip and duplicating by burn. The alternatives don’t make it so easy. Except media monkey which was my choice before I went Mac.
H.P. Saucecraft says
I don’t feckin’ hate IT but I was always a Gandalf’s Garden man myself.
mikethep says
That curious noise you hear is Afterworders under 50 scratching their heads.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Who cares about the teenagers?
Gary says
Arte they still here? Both of them?
kool_aid_wino says

Khraungbin & Leon Bridges – Texas Sun (Texas Sun EP)
Stars – That Girl (From Capleton Hill)
Little Green Cars – Them (Absolute Zero)
Nothing earlier than 2013
Mike_H says
My digitised library seems to stretch almost from the dawn of recording to just last week.
New Camilla George album “Ibio-Ibio” is aces. New Keith Jarrett “Bordeaux Concert” album is nowhere near his best. New The Comet Is Coming album “Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam” is groovy.
“Anne Dudley Plays The Art Of Noise” is an interesting newly-acquired album from 2017.
Max the Dog says
Apropos of nothing, Soda Blonde are actually a new incarnation of Little Green Cars – almost the same lineup with Faye O’Rourke being lead vocalist / front person with SB and previously co-lead with LGC.
Guiri says
Psychocandy – Jesus & Mary Chain
Stop your Sobbing – Kinks
Oh! the Divorces – Tracey Thorn
Bloodline – Monkey Swallows the Universe
Everything Counts – Depeche Mode
I’d completely forgotten about MStU. A decent song but what drunken excess possessed them to name themselves that, or maybe I’m missing a reference? The name certainly doesn’t scream pleasant female-fronted indie folk.
Bingo Little says
Oh! The Divorces – what a tune.
Guiri says
Yup. Best of the bunch.
Cookieboy says
Not one of these songs means anything to me
Stars and Sons- Broken Social Scene
Let The Cool Goddess Rust Away – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Halfway Home – TV on the Radio
My Girls – Animal Collective

She’s a Knockout – Social Distortion
We Celebrate Armies – Kahoots
One Day I’ll Fly Away – Kelly Llorenna
Dirty Water – Jesus & Mary Chain
fitterstoke says
Which of the five are yours/hers?
Gary says
Rainbow – Rainbow Eyes (Nice, pleasant ballad that perhaps tries a little too hard to be Stairway to Heaven-ey.)
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brook – Sweet Pain (Lovely, wobbly voiced warbling.)
Emitt Rhodes – Tame the Lion (Fine anti-war protest song.)
Beck – Pay No Mind (Snoozer) (Very good lyrics.)
Darondo – True (Pleasant enough soul vibe, sort of anonymous sounding.)
myoldman says
Here’s my five for the randomiser
Israel – Siouxsie and The Banshees
Can We Start Again? – Tindersticks
Great Spangled Fritillary – Cocteau Twins
Another Boy Drowning – The The
And On We Go (BBC session) – The Lilac Time
Very indie/post punk, I guess. I hadn’t heard Simple Pleasure by Tindersticks for an age so that’s going on in full now
Paul Hewston says
Bonobo – The Shark
Keleketla! – Into The Light
The Go! Team – Mayday
Bob Dylan – Duncan and Brady (from a Saratoga Springs 2000 bootleg)
Bruce Springsteen – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (from a Manchester show I went to in May 2016 – played because someone had gone to the show in a Santa outfit)
Pretty random those.
fitterstoke says
Oho! A Springsteen cover…topicality is always suspicious (as Control used to say).
atcf says
Michael & The Messengers – (Just Like) Romeo and Juliet
Nat King Cole – (What Can I Say) After I Say I’m Sorry
Geno Washington – (I Gotta) Hold On to my Love
Feist – 1234
Annette Hanshaw – My Sin
Not sure why there’s a (brackets) theme there…
fitterstoke says
Nat King Cole! Superb!
Ainsley says
Peter Gabriel – Intruder
Little Umbrellas Cucamonga Version – Zappa
Coffee & TV – Blur
With Every Heartbeat – Robyn
After All – Bowie
Something for everyone there, I think 😊
Bingo Little says
Keep Their Heads Ringin – Dr Dre
I’ll Never Smile Again – Billie Holiday
Crystal – New Order
Lady Don’t Tek No – Latryx
This Is The Lost Generation – The Lost Generation
Not bad at all. That Latryx track is an absolute banger.
salwarpe says
Bone Machine – Pixies
Festival of Colours – The Creatures
La La La La – Toto La Momposina
Omega Amigo – The Shamen
Answer#1 – Bill Frisell
I thought there would be something Colombian in there.

From my MP3 player that I probably haven’t added to in 10 years at least…
Bob Dylan – Dirt Road Blues
Stornoway – Zorbing
The Waterboys – Girl from the North Country
Nina Simone – Save Me
Haircut 100 – Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)
Happy with them and not as 80s biased as it usually generates.
Locust says
She Said She Said – The Beatles
Wedding of a Friend – Brigid Mae Power
Sanctuary – Eliza Gilkyson
How Could I Complain? – Pete Lawrie (from an old Word comp, apparently)
Ain’t Got No/I Got Life [Hair] – Nina Simone
Two very familiar ones bookending three that I honestly can’t remember ever listening to before (although I know I have). I was going to cheat and do the next five instead, but the first track selected after Nina was one I very much dislike…
