Usual rules, first 5 songs that come up on random and you have to be perfectly honest!
1. Daniel and the Sacred Harp – The Band
2. There’s Always Me – Elvis Presley
3. Help Me Rhonda (live) – Beach Boys
4. Love or Money (extended version) – Prince
5. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow – Dusty Springfield

Seeing as though I’m wide awake (and reading to make me drop off again) at 5am because my daughters mate, who’s having a sleepover, went downstairs to get a drink of water, waking us all up when the house alarm went off, I’ll go first (well, second really). I don’t have any of my iPods near me, but I have my phone, which has £23,001 songs on it, or so it says.
So…
1 James Blake – Life Round Here (from Overgrown)
2 Janelle Monae – It’s Code (from Electric Lady)
3 Kendrick Lamar – Night of the Living Junkies (from O(verly) D(edicated)
4 Kooley High Featuring Median – Yeah Yeah (from David Thompson)
5 Scienz Of Life Featuring MF DOOM – Yikes!!! (From Project Overground: The Scienz Experiment – although on my iPod it’s from the DOOM compilation)
Strange pattern to the first four, which shows that at 5am the randomiser on my phone can’t be arsed to put the effort in, so it just flicked on a few tracks every time, until the last one, when it knew I was on to it. I flicked it on a few more tracks to see what pattern emerged and the next three were by Prince, Public Image and Overlook, so once again it couldn’t be bothered to go far. Lazy little sod. I’ve actually got 16,000+ tracks on this iPad, so let’s see if its idea of randomness is better than his little mate’s…
1 7L & Esoteric Featuring Inspectah Deck (so Czarface, basically!) – Speaking Real Words (from The Soul Purpose)
2 Pessimist – War Cry (from Pessimist)
3 21 Savage Featuring Darryl J – Slutty (from Savage Life)
4 Simian Mobile Disco – Sleep Deprivation ( from Attack Decay Sustain Release)
5 Skee Mask – Session Add (from
Mmm, I seem to have dropped back off to sleep mid-sentence. The Skee Mask track is from Compro. The iPad had a better understanding of random than the phone did, although it seemed to have a little joke with me with track 4.
Interesting that you refer to your songs in monetary terms. I, too, have spent tens of thousands of pounds on music, mainly CDs over the last thirty odd years and they are now effectively valueless. They aren’t far from obsolete, as is the iPod.
I don’t know what the world is coming to.
Bleary eyes, 5 in the morning, glasses downstairs, I’m surprised there’s not more mistakes.
But yes, CDs (and Blu Rays/DVDs for that matter) are a great way to lose money, if you’re just looking to make investments. Although it always seems to me that CDs I want go for far more than the amount I can get for ones I want to sell. But 15 years ago most people’s vinyl collection was worthless. Collectible vinyl maintained it’s value, but most vinyl records weren’t even worth trying to sell. Whereas we’re now at a point where collectible CDs are still worth a bit, but 95% of our collection isn’t even worth trying to sell eBay. However, now you go to secondhand shops and even the tattiest, rubbish albums have ridiculous prices. Maybe then, if we hang on to our CDs, when all the millennials realise that vinyl’s not all it’s cracked up to be our CDs will be worth a fortune*.
*They won’t.

So, Afterworders. Confession time.
If your Randomiser is a complete dud, a total embarrassment, do you bravely post it anyway with a wry smile, do you try again in hope of an improvement, or do you move on to another AW thread (or even quit your AW session altogether and seek comfort in the bottle) in disgust?
I confess that once, in the past, I was so terribly dismayed by what was revealed that I immediately Randomised again and used that result instead. I know it was wrong and I do feel shame, but I just couldn’t help myself. I do have an aspiration to musical tastefulness that I like to maintain.
I did this before but randomiser lists are:
1. Something obvious
2. Something cool that you’ve never heard of
3. A live/bootleg/remix version of something obvious
4. Token young persons’ record that I’d never listen to again without shuffle
5. Bob bastard Dylan again
Yes.
Once.
Never again.
I’m so sorry everyone.
Ez A Szerelem – Kyri Ambrus (from a really good 60s Hungarian Beat Girls comp)
Sky-Man and the Moon – David Campbell

Love of Reign – Gonjasufi
Know one of these. Guess which one?
Great news – Rita and I have decided to live in Punxsutawney forever
Love that track by Great news but what about the other 4 songs?
Great news – Rita and I have decided to live in Punxsutawney forever.

Stu Phillips – Portugal – Qual E’ Caminho Da Praia (from Follow Me OST)
Redlands Palomino Co – Swim
Girl Ray – Cutting Shapes
Edda dell’Orso – Una Spiaggia A Mezzogiorno
Cool. Here in Punxsutawney we can safely say we have never heard a single track of any of the artists you list. Cue “I Got You, Babe” and repeat
Here in London I can say the same.
But ain’t it cheating having one of your own songs included, @eyesteel ?
( @carl , I think you’d like the Redlands Palomino Co.)
Well, yes, I know it looks bad, but I assure you I was entirely subject to the whims of the shuffle!
Thanks @retropath2, I am giving Redlands Palomino Company a listen, and they certainly sound like my sort of thing.
Have they split up? The newest album on Spotify is 2014’s Broken Carelessly.
@Carl we are still very much a thing, although our work rate has admittedly dropped in recent years (next gig London March 2020)
Ah, I saw you then, supporting Richmond Fontaine at the Borderline 12-13 years ago, when Barry got excited before the encore and said that Richmond Fontaine were the best band he’d ever put on there (I preferred the Pernice Brothers or Whiskeytown myself). I enjoyed your performance and I recall that my mate who I’d dragged along preferred you to the main act.
Edit: in googling to make sure I’d remembered his name was Barry I cam upon a thread from here that mentioned he’d died. I spent a lot of time at the Borderline back the 90s and early 2000s. I was well into the Americana bands he put on, like Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown, Neal Casal, Peter Bruntnell, Joe Pernice/Pernice Brother and, of course, Eileen Rose, who seemed to support everybody! I also was a regular at the Wednesday night Midweeker. Us nurses found it easier to request a Thursday off to recover from a night out than a Saturday or Sunday and the music at the Midweeker was ace. Having said that, I was much younger then, so it wasn’t uncommon to be getting in from the club at 2:30 and being sat manning the triage desk in A&E 5 hours later. Don’t know how we did it!
Thank, for that update @eyesteel. I may not be in London for the first half of March, but I will definitely be here in the second half, so I’ll keep an eye out for Redlands Palomino Company gigs.
If you’ve not heard of Edda dell’Orso you’ve certainly heard her voice on many a Morricone soundtrack…
Here in Punxsutawney we can confidently say we have never heard a note of any of them Morricone soundtracks except when we feel asleep in the warmth of the cinema and woke up to I Got You Babe (again)
Shuffling the big Anything That Sounded Vaguely Interesting (cue predictable comments) 35hour Spotify playlist on my phone gives:

“Dream Town” – The Catenary Wires
“Rest In Peace For The Error Shall Not Be Repeated” – Self Defence Family
Bonus 6th Track : “On Graveyard Hill” – Pixies
