I have just read that article Niall, thanks for posting. Very moving I think – the real Carey is quite dismissive in his own way but I feel it is masking much deeper feelings. Like with Graham Nash I think she had an intensity with her lovers that perhaps left them feeling they were the one – even if it was only ever fleeting.
A bit like the protagonist in Richard Thompson’s Beeswing I don’t think Joni was up for settling down. Lovely story though.
Funny , soaked up the story and never noticed it was “ our Kate”.
She’s forgotten you too… fickle, oh so fickle.
Excellent find Niall – actually I’m a bit miffed that this article isn’t in the print Christmas edition, but only appears online. I pay the so-and-sos richly to subscribe to the printed version, and then they go and leave this little gem out of it. The sods.
that was exactly the response of a Joni fan who I shared this with – “ALL THOSE FLIPPING SUBSCRIPTIONS AND I COULD HAVE MISSED THIS!!”
Talking of the New Statesman in his diary column, Ian Hislop recommends the 16th century Spanish song Riu Riu Chi which has become a sort of carol – sung by The Monkees. He is not being ironic and it is as good as it is unexpected.
Aren’t The Monkees a bit too new and “with it” for Hislop?
if anyone wants to read the ‘Carey’ story in its natural form, with nice big colour photos too, you can now do so by buying the current issue (i.e. in the shops in Jan 2022) of The New Statesman, which has included Kate Mossman’s article in the print edition.
For a moment I thought the Staggers had gone bonkers over the All I Want For Christmas Is You hitmaker.
That’ll be the December issue, no doubt.
Is there nothing to which the Aussie Booker Prize-winning novelist won’t turn his hand?
It’s not a monthly; the issue is dated 7th – 13th January, and follows the Christmas Special dated 10th Dec – 6th Jan.
