First contemporary band I was kind of aware of at the time. Metal Guru being no. 1. Remember seeing them on Crackerjack. Still my favourite Bolan tune. Also became aware of Osmonds, Jackson 5, Glitter, maybe Bowie. Guess I was around 9 or so, then didn’t really bother with chart music again until about 76
The first pop star I ever loved. I remember hearing get it on on the radio and absolutely loving it and I was hooked from then on. I did all the tyrannosaurus Rex albums. All the T-Rex albums up to Tanx then I moved on. Punk did for him. He tried to join in with the Zeitgeist but it just didn’t work and he became fat and cut his hair and it was all very sad.
Tanx started to show the cracks – a good album, but not a great album.
Zinc Alloy was where things did fall apart – Marc’s reliance on cocaine and brandy and firing Tony Visconti halfway through didn’t help the cause. And the decline begun … and more cocaine and brandy wasn’t helping.
But … 1976s Futuristic Dragon is a fine album indeed – Marc seemed to have got “something” back.
“Dandy In The Underworld” should’ve/could’ve been the start of a new phase for Marc
Loved him and his music from Hot Love / Electric Warrior to Tanx. Bought all the other stuff as well but they were his untouchable years (to me at least) and l still play his records on a regular basis.
I went to a local record shop a few years ago and they had “Electric Warrior” on nice fresh vinyl. I hadn’t seen my copy for years. I played it with great joy then went to file it .. to find my original copy sitting there.

Wasn’t my cup of tea at the time but can appreciate his legacy a lot more now. and there is no question he wrote some excellent songs.
