Tom Vek the promising indie song writer from the 00’s is back today with a surprise new album and a crowd funded music player. Now it looks lovely , love the idea but at £500 he’s got a hard sell on his hands. Even Neil Young couldn’t shift his MP3 player.

Will it play my 78s?
There’s a wax cylinder attachment in development.
Neil’s Pono was certainly not an mp3 player.
That’s very true. It was a serious bit of kit, wrapped up in a Toblerone.
There’s chocolate in the street
Milk, white and dark
Seriously, I agree – I love the idea, it looks lovely, but £500 is a lot for a DMP. Especially one which is not pocketable, and the battery required to drive a colour screen that big is going to make it heavy. I hope it has some seriously high-end electronics to justify the price, but I didn’t hear mention of that.
Has he never heard of Fiio?
And the proprietry downloads store thing is like throwing money down a drain.
I hope it succeeds, but I doubt it will. Saying that, I have history of backing the wrong tech horse.
I’ll stick to my Fiio, and a tablet for looking at the cover art on Discogs. Or just play the record.
Sorry for interloping but I just wanted y’all to know that I love looking in on the serious audio stuff threads and your comments.
Sincerely, Lord Bellows.
I found some tech details:
Dimensions: h 160mm, w 160mm, d 21mm about the size of a fatboy CD jewel case
Cirrus HQ Digital Audio Converter (DAC) supporting up to 24bit/96k hi-res audio about half the quality I’d expect, 24/192 has been standard for years
Wolfson ‘Class-W’ headphone amplifier power-saving, not exactly audiophile quality
250GB storage (3,000+ MP3 albums) enough for starters. but no micro-SD slot to expand capacity
All-day battery life 8 hours, then, but I bet the screen has to be off for that
3.5mm analog audio out 3.5mm sockets have a notoriously short working life, and decent cans use 6.3mm jacks
Good luck, but I’m out.
He’d be better better off selling the player as an app or some kind of Spotify add on.
That’s just what I thought, but has he ever heard of Roon?
