Remember the Randomiser

Most of you will be stuck into those annoying last minute must listen to x 6 before the end of time, prompted by someone else’s list of obscure and arcane best 20. Give yersels a break, relax, pour a frothy sunday teatime one and shove on some random….
Here’s mine, with a cheeky bottle of Thornbridges’s Jaipur,
1. Las Cuevas/Radio Tarifa, from Temporal (1996). Hadn’t heard this in yonks, hispano-arabic fusion.
Rather good.
2. The Lady of Shalott/Loreena McKerritt, from The Visit (1992). A bit of shrill Enyaesque faux folk
maudlintronica. Nearly 12 bloody minutes. Beaten into submission by the end, and loving it. I bet
@Beany has this.
3. Mustang Sally/Buddy Guy feat. Jeff Beck, from Damn Right I Got the Blues (1991). Hot damn, that’s a
cracker. Before Beck became obsessed with juvenile ersatz blues shouters, can’t remember her name.
And Buddy really is THE blues Guy in my book.
4. Algo Bueno/Dizzy Gillespie & his Orchestra, from, I am afraid, a compilation, Classic Jazz. Still a good
barnstorm tho’
5. You are Everything/Michael McDonald, from Motown (2003). Cracking song, corking vocalist. Call me
cheesy and i’ll call you crackers.
Well that was an odd and entertaining respite.
Back to seeing if the tax-dodgers have delivered yet…..

    3. Dogs D’Amour – More Uncharted Heights Of Disgrace
    I may be the only person left in Britain who still listens to the Dogs by choice. This from the largely forgotten sixth album (not their greatest work if I’m honest, but this track is a corker)

    4. Courtney Barnett – Debbie Downer
    When you declare an album “Album Of The Year” and then forget to listen to it after a while. And then a track pops up to remind you why you made such a brazen statement.

    5. The Duckworth Lewis Method ā€“ Gentlemen and Players
    Another “forgot how good this is” job – brilliant songs, storytelling, bit of humour. Biggest irony? Two Irishmen produce a damn near perfect English-y Cricket-y themed album

    Shouty art-rock, techno from an ex-“glamour” model, Californian surf-twang, ambient/dub and jangly indiepop. A reasonable mix of stuff there.

    Nico’s song is the best of that bunch. How come everybody else’s shuffle throws up obscure and therefore hip songs that I’ve never heard of while mine is decidedly civilian in nature? And while we’re on the subject, I finally got round to watching Dunkirk last night. Feckin’ brill. Best film I’ve seen this year.

    • How many “civilians” have ever heard of any of them would be my comment. Maybe Babyshambles via Daily Hell articles condemning the money spent on Doherty’s education, but little else. And who is Richie Spice?

      • I got that Richie Spice song after it was used to great effect in the closing credits of Attack The Block. I’ve always assumed it was a hit in the pop parade.

    • Iā€™m with you entirely on Dunkirk, itā€™s a masterpiece.

      On your recommendation, I saw Better Watch Out over the weekend and was a little disappointed. It was… OK. Double billed it with The Disaster Artist, which was better, but still not as much fun as The Room itself.

      • Yeah, I wouldn’t claim Better Watch Out as any kind of masterpiece or anyfink. But I loved its unexpected twist away from where I was so sure it was going. And it certainly kept me entertained. I haven’t liked many films this year, but that was one that I enjoyed. I’d give it a healthy three stars if I was Empire. Totes with you on Dunkirk. A true epic, 5 star masterpiece. And it’s very, very rare that I rate a film five stars. Am very much looking forward to The Disaster Artist and so kinda hoping you’re your usual wrong as opposed to your occassional right on that one.

    “Risten” by Mari Boine from “BĆ”lvvoslatjna”. Spoken and sung in the Sami language of Lapland over an electronic-trancey groove.

    “Cinemascope” by Bob Brozman from “Devil’s Slide”. A calypso-style song (with slide guitar accompaniment) about being attracted to the larger sizes in women, using the metaphor of movie screen sizes. He dumps his Wide Screen lady-friend for a 3-Dimensional gal temporarily, but then finds himself a woman who is Cinemascope and is happy.

    “There Is A War” by Leonard Cohen (live in Amsterdam 1988 bootleg). The band’s oud player gets to do some soloing. Len and his ladies deliver the message over a superb tight-but-loose band.

    “Night School” by Frank Zappa from “Jazz From Hell”, his album of Synclavier compositions, virtually unplayable with normal instrumentation, although Ensemble Modern did manage later to work out orchestral arrangements for a few of them.

    “Mr. Syms” by John Coltrane from “Coltrane Plays The Blues”. With McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass end Elvin Jones on drums. Coltrane plays his soprano sax. A slow, lazy melodic blues.

    The next two up were Randy Newman’s “Spies” and Jackie Leven’s “Another Man’s Rain”.

    My phone music has been unchanged for about 3 years now and pretty much every track is well-known by me and selected with care. Probably about time I replaced it all with other stuff.

    Sex Machine – Sly & The Family Stone from Stand! Fabulously bonkers.

    Jigsaw Puzzle Of Life – Kate & Anna McGarrigle. Absolutely beautiful. I don’t listen to this album often enough.

    True Sons Of Zion – The Thievery Corporation from The Temple Of I And I. Didn’t quite get in my top thirty of the year but it’s a mighty album.
