What did you get? What are you getting?

I was going to give it a miss, but may check out one of two stores here in Ottawa that may be less busy….

    For the last couple of years I haven’t looked at what is coming out in advance, so i’m no longer disappointed if I miss out on something. I bought my records from Off The Beaten Tracks in Louth. They opened at 8.00, I turned up at about 9.30 and didn’t have to queue for long to get in, so it was a good result. If I recall correctly, I bought nothing last year.

  4. Tale of two cities:

    First off went to Carnival Records in Malvern. They celebrate RSD but don’t stock any RSD releases. However they heavily discount their stock for the day with the result being I got the Edwyn Collin box of 6 x 7″ singles for £20 (£45 0n Amazon) and then I got Chris Rea Blue Guitars box set (11cd’s and a dvd) for £25.00 which seemed like a great deal but only about £5.00 below the Amazon price.

    Then we went to Rise in Worcester that had a good stock of RSD releases – I picked up the Big Star album and also A nuggets Collection and a Joe Strummer 12″ but I put them all down again. However I did get the My Darling Clementine 10″ which I had got my heart set on so came away a happy camper.

    Both stores were buzzing – only shame is I couldn’t get to Badlands in Cheltenham this pm where Danny and the Champions of the World are playing. Unfortunately wouldn’t have got back in time for ELO gig tonight.

    I went to the local Record Shop last weekend, and I will be visiting the same shop next weekend.
    Today, I am not going there.
    I went last year and it was full of people buying everything in sight (and then probably returning home and slapping it on ebay). Interestingly, and I may have missed them, I’ve never seen them in the shop before or since (they may well be in there today though).
    My curmudgeonly ways prevent me from getting my mitts on some of the goodies advertised (The Alarm, The Damned and The Undertones were of particular interest), but so be it – a principle is a principle, no matter how stupid it is.

    I think I will follow mini’s lead and have a CSD instead

  7. I find that most of the few things I like are usually available on line at face value or less sooner or later. I am afraid I choose to go down that route rather than take a day off to travel for a couple of hours to a shop that may or may not have got what I was interested in.

    I don’t say this because I feel sour or because I think the exercise is a waste of time, simply to demonstrate that current RSD tactics may be rather narrowly targeted.

  8. After a visit to one of my local secondhand emporia where I purchased 3 CDs for a tenner (Jonathan Richman, Bill Withers and Barrence Whitfield/Tom Russell) I made my way to Bristol. Had two of the kids in tow so a visit to Forbidden Planet followed by brunch locally took us to Rise for about 12pm. An extensive queue convinced me I couldn’t be arsed so we got back in the car and headed for Sound Knowledge in Marlborough. Busy but no queue. After some deliberation I came away with Matthew Sweet reissue and a Jason Molina 7″. Along with another CD as well – Blind Willie Johnson tribute thingy. Show of Hands played a short set outside the shop and there is more live music tomorrow. Hopefully SK have a good weekends trade.

  9. I went to Spillers in Cardiff ( it was a toss up between there & TK Maxx but I fancied Count Basie album – up to the minute, me!)
    Well it was pretty good. Nicely full shop full of vinyl fans nice bit of old Rocksteady on 45s being played – & there was a band setting up. I got a Coltrane CD & Mexican Morrisey album – I don’t do vinyl, but was happy to see a thriving independent record shop & smiley people.

  12. This is the first one in 4 years I haven’t been ‘working’ on (I say working in the loosest sense of the word) – I had other stuff to do today but passed through Liverpool late afternoon to see what was going down.

    I headed to Probe Records first – (I’ve been a regular customer for 25 years) it was heaving even though their RSD stock was depleted by the time I got there people were just getting stuck in and browsing and buying other, better records – it was all hands on deck, the Probe twitter feed sprung into action and whisper it…I think the Probe guys were quite enjoying their day. – I bought my only RSD purchase so far which was the Warp Records EP which is excellent and exactly what an RSD release should be – new music specially released for the day – rather than a green vinyl version a Jona Lewie 7″ you can get in any charity shop.

    3Beat (usually a slightly intimidating super niche dance music shop where everything is behind the counter on a wall – no idea how they make ends meet but they do) seemed to be doing brisk trade although notably had Alan Partridge LPs galore, Jacaranda Records was packed as they’re actually a bar that sells records and had some gigs going on but judging by their record boxes they’d shifted most of RSD stock what they had – Dig Vinyl weren’t bothering this year (hence my day off) as they’ve decided to focus on 2nd hand but they were shifting plenty of stuff too so a good RSD it seems.

    I wasn’t blown away by the RSD list this year. I was hoping to get the Magazine thing although I noticed a lot of shops had sold out very early in the day which either means it was very popular or the shops underestimated demand in which case more copies might emerge in the week. I was interested in the Cavern of Anti Matter 12″ until I saw the ridiculous price – I may cave in tomorrow as I’ll passing a few shops on my way home.

  13. I had a Charity Shop Day instead. Picked up Emmylou Harris – Her Best Songs LP, on K-Tel, for £1.00 (still protected in shrink wrap) and a Ken Dodd LP for 60p. The Daily Mail CDs of Bonnie Tyler’s Faster Than The Speed Of Night and Dexys Midnight Runners’ Searching for the Young Soul Rebels came free with my purchases.

    Looked at the racks of “vinyls” in Fopp on Thursday and was able to find a brand new 4 Seasons Christmas LP for a mere £3 + a spare for some other daft Yuletide tunes aficionado.

  14. The Nomads – Sonically speaking with an extra 7″ A good Garage group that I saw playing in a space the same size as a garage. I recommand them to our swedish based afterworders.

    That Bowie picture disc with a more original, cartoony illustration, I had to work after my visit, so I couldn’t check out who did it, but it reminded me of the one who did “all you need is love” animation or a Monty Python’s. I keep it because I never bought the LP back then.

    Motörhead : Bad Magic, Ochre coloured, some civilizations used red ochre as a colour for their burial of their dead. I never take the time to buy that record, I don’t think everyone buy it for selling it on Ebay, some needs as a way to mark that day they lost him.

    Speaking of something completely different,

    there was an awful lot of ed she ran releases.

  15. I picked up the Public Service Broadcasting 7″. I also wanted the Mungo’s Hi Fi 7″, but missed it. It’s a lovely dancehall take on the old Jump In Line calypso (the one at the end of Beetlejuice).
