I have a friend visiting London with the above nights free and hoping to see some live music. She’s asked me for suggestions. I don’t live in London so, having checked the itineraries of a handful of folk/blues type artists I know (none of whom are in town those nights), I can’t go any further – I just don’t know any welcoming, reasonably-priced club-level venues in order to be able to search from that angle. My friends not an AW-esque music connoisseur but so nothing really obscure or demanding – just something/somewhere that might be fun…

Would a current copy of mojo or uncut have the main venues ? Does time out still exist?

The Borderline is one of my favourites, or Dingwalls / Lock 17 in Camden.

Here’s where I look for this sort of listing:
Hoxton Bar and Kitchen – nice small venue with a variety of music types
Bush Hall – Small to medium size venue – just big enough to feel empty sometimes but small enough for some intimate gigs by up and coming bigger names.
The Garage – It’s not exactly posh but it’s a very nice size.
All the above have a variety of music types
There’s also The Green Note and The Borderline, both of which tend more towards the americana/folky end of the scale.

You could try The Lexington, Half Moon Putney, Fiddler’s Elbow (Kentish Town) or if all else fails, go to The Golden Hind pub at the top of Marylebone Lane where on certain nights (think Thursday & Friday) they have sing songs around the piano.

Thanks for the advice all – I’ll google around all of the above within the next few days. I’m afraid to start now, cos I’ve things to do and you just know you’ll get dragged down the rabbit hole for hours…
